C. SCOTT HOARSanfordC. Scott Hoar, 75, of Sanford, died September 2 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.He was born in Westbrook on October 20, 1929, a son of Leigh E. and Marion (James) Hoar.He was a graduate of Deering High School in Portland where he held a state record in cross country. He was a graduate of the former Portland Junior College and a 1951 graduate of the Boston University School of Journalism.He was employed for 35 years as a photojournalist with the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, retiring in 1988. He also worked in public relations for Acton Fair, Nasson College and the Webber Hospital.A resident of Sanford for over 50 years, Scottie was an active and visible member of the community. In the same year, he was recipient of the Citizen of the Year award from both the Sanford Kiwanis Club and the Sanford Springvale Rotary Club. A very active Kiwanian, he was a life member and past president of the Sanford Kiwanis Club. He was a founder and longtime manager of the Kiwanis Free Clinic. He was a past Lieutenant Governor of District 6 of Kiwanis International, and was the New England chair of HOBY. He was a frequent attendee at Kiwanis functions and conventions all over the world and always dutifully read a report of his exploits at the local Kiwanis lunchtime meetings.In his retirement Scottie volunteered his services to several organizations. He was active at the H. D. Goodall Hospital where he served on its Board of Directors, helped to implement the Lifeline program, and recently served on the search committee for a new CEO for the hospital.He served 3 terms on the former Board of Selectmen for the town of Sanford, and was the Sanford representative to the Maine Municipal Association. He served on several boards of local land trusts. He also served as a York County bail commissioner.Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Christina (Stone) Hoar of Sanford, 4 children, Eric Hoar and his wife Nancy of Springvale, Pamela R. Godin of Bangor, Timothy S. Hoar and his wife Laurie of Limington, Tina S. Hoar of Ellsworth, 4 sisters, Elaine Allen of Lewiston, Vivian Flick of Waldoboro, Joanna Howard of Portland, Rachel Hoar of Augusta, a brother, Edward Hoar of Ohio, and 9 grandchildren.Scottie's family will receive relatives and friends for an informal celebration of his life on Sunday (today) from 1-3 and 6-8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Sanford Kiwanis Club, P.
