Bird A. Howard

Bird A. Howard, 69, of No. Shapleigh, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at his home following a brave battle with cancer. He was born December 13, 1935 at Shapleigh Corner, Shapleigh a son of John D. and Elva M. (Connors) Howard and attended the local Lyndsay School and Sanford schools.At a young age, Bird had to go out into the working world. He was considered a "Jack of all trades." His first job was working on a farm, then Central Television doing antenna work. He worked in the woods and was a steeplejack with many construction jobs. Being mechanically inclined, Mr. Howard drove tractor-trailer through out the United States. He worked for Universal Shoe and Allied Shoe. He owned and operated No. Shapleigh Gas and Oil and retired following 15 years with Prime Tanning in Berwick. Unable to sit still for very long, Bird took a part time job as a deliveryman for Sanford Radiator until his health declined. His family was well cared for and he never was one to be out of work.Bird was a generous man. He was one to lend advice as well as a helping hand. He enjoyed working with children and was a Webalo Leader and Cub Scout Master. Mr. Howard was a selectman for the town of Shapleigh for 3 years and belonged to the Shapleigh and Ross Corner Fire Departments. Most recently, he was the President of Highland Grove Cemetery Association.Birds fishing and hunting trips Down Maine were a highlight to his life. His favorite fishing spot was the Salmon Pool at Sabec Lake. Being outside surrounded by the beauty of nature was so special to him. There will always be that shining glow from the water where he would cast his line. Mr. Howard was an avid reader. Since retirement, he had a book in his hands. He enjoyed learning about the State of Maine and Westerns were a favorite. Bird will be sadly missed by all, but especially by his family.Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Myrtle M. (Hill) Howard of No. Shapleigh; two sons, Donald and his wife, Darlene Howard of Sanford and Ronald L. Howard of Biddeford; one grandson, Jeremy Howard of Sanford; one nephew and five nieces and many cousins.He was predeceased by his son, Albert G. Howard in 1999 and by a brother, Clarance G. Howard and his sister, Thelma Goodwin. At Mr. Howard's request, there will be no calling hours. A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at Highland Grove Cemetery in No. Shapleigh.
