Betty M. Bernier

Betty M. Bernier, 92, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well lived.

Born in Portland, Maine, on July 11, 1933, Betty was one of nineteen children born to Martin and Eveleen (England) Tuttle. She grew up in Sanford, where she attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School. In 1954, she married the love of her life, Roland Bernier. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and devotion, raising two children and sharing nearly 55 wonderful years of marriage before Roland’s passing in 2009.

Betty spent many years working in the local shoe shops, where she formed lasting friendships and became known for her strong work ethic and warm personality. Outside of work, she found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved knitting and crocheting beautiful handmade gifts for family and friends, completing puzzles, reading magazines, and spending time shopping. One of the highlights of her week was her cherished Thursday outings with “the girls,” which she always eagerly anticipated.

A devout Catholic, Betty was a faithful communicant of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish in Sanford. Her faith guided her throughout her life and was reflected in her kindness, generosity, and compassion toward others.

Above all else, Betty was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Affectionately known as “Ah Ah Grammy” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she treasured every moment spent with her family. She was a wonderful cook who took great pride in preparing delicious meals and gathering loved ones around her table. Betty’s home was always a welcoming place, filled with warmth, laughter, and plenty of good food.

Friendly, outgoing, and genuinely caring, Betty seemed to know everyone she met. She was blessed with many friends and never failed to greet others with a warm smile. Loved by all who knew her, she had a gift for making people feel special and valued. She also found great enjoyment in feeding and watching the birds that visited her yard, a pastime that brought her much peace and happiness.

Betty served as a remarkable role model for her family, demonstrating through her actions the importance of faith, kindness, hard work, and unconditional love. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Roland Bernier; her son, Ricky Bernier; and many of her brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Houle and her husband, Michael, of Sanford; two grandchildren, Brock Houle and his wife, Angela, of Florida, and Mandy Edmonds and her husband, Chris, of Sanford; two great-grandchildren, Betty Houle of Florida and Violet Edmonds of Sanford; her sister, Lena Campbell and her husband, Don, of Wells; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 9th at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, located on North Avenue in Sanford. Interment will follow at Limington Village Cemetery.
