Bernard "Bernie" Orne

August 11, 1939 ~ November 2, 2017
WINDHAM - Bernard "Bernie" Orne, 78, of Read Road, died Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his family by his side.
Born in Boothbay Harbor on August 11, 1939, Bernie was the son of the late Everett and Edith (Nelson) Orne. He was a graduate of Boothbay Regional High School.
Following high school, Bernie worked as a pipe fitter and welder for several years. After a very short retirement, he became the proud owner of Popeye's Ice House Tavern for over 20 years. After making a decision to pursue another venture, Bernie recently celebrated his 9th anniversary at his new loved establishment, Weekend at Bernie's Beach Club in Old Orchard Beach.
A generous and caring man, Bernie was always looking out for others. He was a donor to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, the Bruce Roberts Toy Drive and he offered yearly free Thanksgiving Dinners to all, while he owned Popeye's Ice House Tavern.
Bernie had a vivacious and loving personality. He can be remembered by always insisting that everyone around him had "Fun - Fun - Fun!" The time he enjoyed the most, was when he was spending it with his family and friends with a cold Corona in hand. He lived for others and enjoyed spending time with the loves of his life, his sons. Together, Bernie and his sons enjoyed snowmobiling, 4 wheeling, camping, cruising on the Harley and boating. He did it all, gave his all, lived his life to the fullest and was a hell of a kind hearted man.
In addition to his parents, Bernie is predeceased by his sister, Judith Bradley.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane C. (Goddard) Orne of Windham; sons, Michael L. and wife Brenda of Standish, Edward L. and wife Marie of South Portland, and Jeffrey C. and wife Nancy of Biddeford; step-son, Bobby W. Wright of Windham; sister, Patricia Hughes; 10 grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren; a special great niece, Melissa Nessmith-Kuntz and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, his beloved yorkie poo dog, Rocky, passed away the same day of a broken heart.
Visiting Hours celebrating Bernie's life will be held on Sunday, November 5 from 1-3PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Funeral Service will follow at 3PM. Burial will be private at a later date.

Bernie, like his former bar Popeye’s Ice House was a legend and will be missed by many. Popeye’s was a fixture in the West End of Portland and got a bad deal because of local politics. I’m glad Bernie went on to OOB and had success with his new bar…RIP Bernie!
