PORTLAND, MAINE - Bernadette Tatarczuk Murphy, 82, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Mercy Hospital. Bernadette was born in Portland, Maine on May 10, 1932, the daughter of William and Stasia Nalbach Tatarczuk. She attended local schools and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1949 and then from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 as a Registered Nurse. She also attended St. Joseph's College for post graduate work. In March of 1957 she married Dr. Michael Murphy of Ireland at St. Louis Church. Bernadette worked at Mercy Hospital as a surgical nurse before studying at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. After getting married, she and her husband moved to Texas where she served as the Director of Nursing at several Texas facilities. Following the death of her husband in 1976, Bernadette returned to Maine. She attended Sacred Heart and Holy Martyrs Church and was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. Bernadette was a dedicated and talented nurse who believed that no effort was too great to achieve one's goals. She had a sharp intellect and quick wit. She never missed a beat! Bernadette was predeceased by her husband Dr. Michael Murphy; a son Joseph Murphy; a sister Antoinette Tatarczuk in 1996; a brother Msgr. Vincent A. Tatarczuk in 2013; two nephews William and Jeffrey Tatarczuk. She is survived by a son Michael William Murphy (Honey) of New York City; a brother Dr. Joseph R. Tatarczuk (Joan) of Poestenkill, NY; a nephew David Tatarczuk (Jennifer) of Hilliard, Ohio; a niece Jennifer Rohrwasser (Mark) of Paradise Valley, AZ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Saturday June 7, 2014 at St. Louis Church, 279 Danforth Street, Portland. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME. Donations in Bernadette's memory may be made to: Catholic Charities of Maine, P.O.   1. She was a striking and interesting lady and a devoted mother. I recall the fabulous parties and treasure hunts she had for Michael when he was a young boy.

  2. I recall playing with Bernadette’s son, Michael and riding in her army green Mercedes. I always remembered them fondly and wondered where the went when they moved.
