Barbara Taylor Shain, 70, died Tuesday June 18, 2002 at the Newton Center in Sanford after a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her husband, children, and other family members. Born in Norfolk, Virginia to Armand and Evelyn Taylor, Mrs. Shain attended Norfolk schools and graduated from Granby High School in 1950 and from DePaul School of Nursing in 1953. After meeting her future husband in church and marrying in 1953, Mrs. Shain relocated to Maine where she was a nurse for 31 years in local hospitals including 18 years at Goodall Hospital in Sanford. While at Goodall, she was instrumental in organizing the Patient Care Coordinating Program. Mrs. Shain retired from nursing in 1984 to assist in the family business, which includes Shain's Restaurant and Shain's of Maine Ice Cream. Her compassion and humanity, which served her so well in the nursing field, carried over to the business world and touched the lives of patrons and employees, past and present. Mrs. Shain enjoyed her children and grandchildren tremendously. She was very proud of her family and loved to share their accomplishments with those around her. Mrs. Shain is survived by her husband, Rodney A. Shain Sr., to whom she was married for 48 years. She leaves five children, Rodney A. Jr., of Springvale, ME, David S. of Pataskala, OH, Bruce T. of South Hamilton, MA, Jeffrey L. of Sanford, and Susan S. Austin of Sanford, and 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Shain is also survived by two brothers, Armand M. Taylor of Virginia Beach, VA. and Gary W. Taylor of Wythville, VA, and several nieces and nephews.Friends may call on Thursday June 20th from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St. Springvale; where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 2:00 PM.
