Arthur M. Gerry, 85 , of Springvale, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday January 18, 2006 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford. He was born on September 30, 1920 in Sanford a son of Orman R. and Melda G. (Bougie) Gerry. On September 14, 1941 he married R. Evelyn Farwell. She passed away in June 13, 2001 after 60 years of marriage.He attended Sanford schools and was an active member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church of Springvale joining in September of 1940. He taught Sunday school and was a trustee of the Church. He was past master, and lifetime member of the Masonic lodge #190 of Springvale. He was also a life member of the Ruth Chapter of Eastern Star. He worked at the Goodall Sanford mill from 1939 to 1954, Timme corp, NC from 1954 to 1955, and for Kidder Press in Dover, NH 9Moore Business, Harris Corp., Harris Graphics) from 1955 to 1984. He was the manager of the assembly department.He was a veteran of WWII, serving from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed at Fort Devens, MA, basic training at Fort Bragg, NC. He was with the 75th infantry division out of camp Breckingridge, KY. He served overseas from November 1944 to 1946 fighting in the battle of the Bulge. He was chief of section 105 Howitzer- light artillery. He was presented with 3 battle stars.He enjoyed his church, his family and helping others. He was a magnificent husband, fabulous father, and terrific grandfather and great grandfather. He was proud of his family, and attended all the grandchildren and great grandchildren's various sporting and school activities.He kept his home and lawns well maintained, with several beautiful flower gardens, peonies and morning glories were his favorites. He liked to cook, and always made his special dishes to take to family gatherings.His parents, his wife and sister, Jeanette Blaisdell , and a brother, Edgar William Gerry predeceases him.He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Joyce and David Iles of Moody, two grandchildren, Mrs. Sue and John Benuck of Durham, NH, Steven and his son Andrew Iles of Wells, two great grandchildren, Zachary and Ashley Benuck of Durham, NH, one sister, Carrie Weeks of Sanford, two brothers, Gene of Sanford and Fred of York.A funeral service will be held on Saturday January 21 at 2pm at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale. Family and friends are invited to gather for a period of visitation from 1:30 until the time of services. Burial will be in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.
