Amelia Valentino, 92, of Springvale, died April 9 at home after a period of declining health.She was born on September 27, 1919 in Martin's Ferry, OH, the daughter of Alberto and Maria DeMario. The family moved to the Bronx, NY when she was an infant. During her childhood, the family spent three years in Italy with her grandparents where she learned to speak, read and write Italian. She finished elementary school and attended Walton High School in the Bronx.On June 8, 1941, she married Joseph L. Valentino at St. Philip Neri Church in the Bronx. Over the years they raised four children. Her family was the central part of her life.For many years she worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City. She retired from there and moved to Springvale in 1978 where she worked as a ward aid at the Newton Center. She retired from there many years ago.She was a member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale. She enjoyed reading the Bible until her eyesight failed. A favorite biblical passage was the 23rd Psalm.She enjoyed reading and learning about nutrition. She especially enjoyed walking and did so well into her 80's. Her favorite places to walk were around Number One Pond in Sanford, Kennebunk Beach, and the North End of Boston where she would frequent the many Italian restaurants there. She made eight memorable trips to visit her sister and niece in Honolulu, HI.She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Anthony DeMario, a sister Adeline DeMario Maiori and by her husband in 1997.Survivors include two daughters, Donna Normand of Springvale, Maureen Valentino of Sanford, two sons, Vincent Valentino of Springvale, Albert Valentino of Iselin, NJ, a granddaughter Suzanne Normand of Sanford and a niece Julie Maiori of Honolulu, HI.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday beginning at 10:30 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale until 12:00 noon when a funeral service will be held with the Rev. Dennis Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
