Yarmouth - Alice Elizabeth (Donovan) Owen, 97, died on Thursday, March 25, 2021, at Coastal Manor. Alice was born on July 5, 1923, in Portland, the daughter of the late John A. and Mary Margaret (Reidy) Donovan. She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in the Class of 1942. While in high school she won the History Medal and was voted as class treasurer all four years. In high school the girls called her Donnie and they thought she would be the first congresswoman. She dreamed she would end up marrying a sailor one day. October 3, 1948, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, her dream came true and married the love of her life, Walter Owen. Alice worked as a long distance telephone operator for Bell Telephone Company as well as being a mother to four children. Her family fondly remembers her molasses cookies and eggnog pies with her special ingredients. She enjoyed baking as well as quilting and tatting. She enjoyed keeping up with the latest news, listening to the radio and talking over tea. When she found time to read she enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and other detective books and movies. Her favorite song was "Waltzing Matilda." She was a congregant of St. Mathew's Parish in Limerick, and was deeply committed to the Catholic Church. She supported missionaries oversees for many years. She was predeceased by her son, Brian Owen; two sisters, Rosemary Gagnon and Joyce Choate; and a brother, John Donovan Jr. She is survived by a daughter, Marianne Owen Beattie and her husband Kurt of WA; two sons, Brent Owen and his wife Rita of CT, Christopher Owen and his wife Suzanne of Standish; three sisters, Nancy Elliot of MA, Patricia Cadegan of NH, Judith Nee of MA; two grandchildren, Sean Owen and his wife Amy, and Carolyn Owen; many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews; her best friends, Marion Goff and Tootsie Reidy. Visiting hours will be held from 4:00-6:00PM on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited in the chapel at 9:15AM on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland.
