Alfred J. Materese, 85, of Springvale died April 23 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.He was born in Medford, MA on October 15, 1925, the son of Anthony and Mary (Silva) Materese, attended schools in Massachusetts and was a graduate of Melrose High School.He served in the US Navy on the USS Ticonderoga in the Pacific during World War II. He was responsible for saving several lives including that of his twin brother after the ship suffered a Kamikaze attack.Upon returning home, he worked in the family tailoring business in Boston for several years and moved to Springvale in 1963. While in this area, he worked at Moore Business Forms in Dover, NH and then for several years with Pratt-Whitney in North Berwick from where he retired in 1988.Family members recalled how enjoyed singing and dancing and that he was quite the jokester. He enjoyed spending summers at his cottage on Mousam Lake and water skied well into his 70's.He was a Past Master of the Springvale Masonic Lodge and served three times as Worthy Patron of the Ruth Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, of which he was a life member.His wife, Janet (Averill) Materese, died in 2009.Survivors include a son, Stephen Materese of Portsmouth, NH, a daughter, Elaine Sawyer, and her husband Craig of Springvale, grandchildren Kristen Boos, her husband James and their daughter Mela of Dover, NH, Angela Greaser and her husband Dan of Coatsville, PA, Joshua Paul Sawyer and Brittany Gladys Sawyer, both of Springvale, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale with the Rev. Dennis Reeves officiating. Burial will be in the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Sanford Walk to End Alzheimer's, P. O.
