Al P. Flayhan, 80, of Sanford, Maine died peacefully at home on February 12, 2018 surrounded by his loving family after a short battle with cancer. Al was born on February 27, 1937 in Dover, New Hampshire to Michael and Elizabeth Flayhan. Al attended St. Mary's School and worked at his brother's army and navy store as a teenager, before serving in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Miller Shoe Manufacturing Company for 12 years, leaving, to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for the next 25 years until he retired. Al rejoined the workforce for an additional 19 years working as a bus monitor for Ledgemere and Provider bus companies. Al was truly 'one of a kind' and had a passion for gambling. He liked playing cards with family and friends, the slot machines and taking trips to Foxwoods and Oxford Casino. He enjoyed attending his son's rock and roll tribute band shows, and took every opportunity to join the band on stage. Some of his favorite songs were by AC/DC, Motely Crue and Guns N Roses. Al was the life of any party and loved making those around him laugh, especially his McDonald's coffee crew. Al was very proud of his Lebanese heritage and made frequent trips to George's Bakery in Massachusetts with his sisters. He loved sharing Lebanese food with his family and friends. Al was incredibly proud of his seven grandchildren. He was their biggest fan, especially on the sports field. One of his greatest pleasures was attending baseball, softball, basketball and field hockey games. He was often the loudest fan in the crowd. He is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jeanne Desrochers Flayhan with whom he shared a wonderful life. Together, Al and Jeanne raised four children and lived in the home that her father built for 59 years. They shared a love for family, Sunday dinners and summers by their pool.He is survived by his daughters Laurie Melanson and husband Mark of Sanford, Paula McCallion and husband Don of Strafford, New Hampshire; and sons Michael Flayhan and wife Arline of Sanford and Tony Flayhan and wife Missy of Springvale. Grandchildren; Maria Rungi, Tiffany Melanson, Ryan Flayhan, Donald McCallion, Tyler Flayhan, Chelsea McCallion and Anthony Flayhan. Two great grandchildren; Mya and Vincent Rungi. Al is also survived by three sisters, Bobbi Tyger, Caroline Kenney, MaryLou Flayhan and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, February 15th from 5: 00 to 8:00 PM at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 17th 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale.
