Agrippina (Severino) Powell

SOUTH PORTLAND Agrippina Severino Powell, 93, died on November 23, 2015, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a brief illness. She was born January 12, 1922, in Portland, the daughter of Agrippino and Marie Estella (Olivetti) Severino, who immigrated from Sicily to Portland in the early 1900s. The seventh of eight children, she was affectionately called Bebe her entire life. She grew up at 109 Newbury Street and attended Portland Schools before working in the citys garment manufacturing industry. On July 10, 1950 she married John Francis Powell and they made their first home on Congress Street on Munjoy Hill where their first two children were born. They moved to South Portland in 1957 where their third child was born. The Powell home was always a gathering place for family and friends. Agrippina loved to cook and always had a ready supply of homemade treats for all to enjoy. A lifelong communicant of St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, Agrippina was a member of the Sacred Heart Sodality and worked many years at the St. Roccos Italian Bazaar. She and John enjoyed 52 years together prior to his passing in 2003. She was also predeceased by her son, Daniel Edward Powell, her brothers Frank, Joseph, and Anthony (Muzzy) and her sisters Mary Nolfo, Josephine Maiorano, and Grace Keaney. She is survived by her sister, Jeanette Bouchard of Portland; daughters, Margaret M. Hawkins and her husband Alan of South Portland and Mary Ann Welch and her husband David of Fairfield, CT; six grandchildren, Emily Hawkins of Brooklyn, NY; Katie Hawkins of South Portland; John W. Powell of South Portland; Megan Welch of Denver, CO; Alison Welch of New Brunswick, NJ; and Eileen Welch of Vienna, VA; many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are several people who were very special to her, including her niece Stella Sorrells, Troy Andrews who was like a son to her, Luke and Maggie Andrews, Leslie and Susan Saba, John and Joanna Ryan and family, Rachel Deans, Miriam and Christopher Collins and family. The family would like to recognize the care Agrippina received from Dr. James Zeitlin as well as the many very compassionate individuals at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 27 from 4-7PM at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the Funeral Home at 11:15AM on Saturday, November 28 followed by a 12PM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland.
