Obituary: Ada Melissa (Towle) HawkinsDateline: Newfield, Maine and Storrs, ConnAda M. Hawkins, 88, well known community member and friend to many, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine.She was born in Newfield October 6, 1914 the daughter of Albion Percy and Abbie Estelle (Libby) Towle. She attended Newfield Grammar School, Hampden Academy, Normal School in the Maine School of Commerce and taught business training and typing from 1935 -1939 at Caribou High School, Caribou, Maine. Ada was a member of the Pi Beta Phi while attending the University of Maine, graduating with the Class of 1940. Mrs. Hawkins has made her home in Storrs, Connecticut since 1947. While residing there, Mrs. Hawkins was president of the Alumnae Club and an active member of the advisory board for the University of Connecticut. She was also a National Officer with Pi Beta Phi for many years. She was a Justice of the Peace for the town of Mansfield, CT and was recognized in the year 2000 by the Mansfield Republican Town Committee for 25 years of service. She was a member of the Storrs Congregational Church. While Connecticut was her state to vote in, Mrs. Hawkins heart always came back to Newfield. She relished her extended stays at her home on the Poverty Pond. She was a member of the Newfield Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. An avid traveler, Mrs. Hawkins went to Europe, Russia, Hawaii, Switzerland, Tahiti and many other places. She loved traveling with her friends and family. A positive and generous woman, Mrs. Hawkins gave land to the church and several acres of land to the Newfield Historical Society. She has left a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Her two daughters survive her: Elsa Melissa Hawkins of Worcester, MA and Alice and her husband, Craig Cooley or Orlando, Florida. Her grandchildren: Melissa and her husband, Jeremy Lucas of Virginia; Abbie, Mary, and Benjamin Cooley of Orlando, Florida; Alice and Irish Towle both of Presque Isle, Maine and two nephews: Thomas and Roger Hawkins and one niece: Janet Hawkins. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Hawkins and by her brother, Charles Towle.Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 14th. At 2 :00PM at the Merriland Ridge Memorial United Methodist Church on Route 11. The Rev. Phyllis Macdonald, officiating. A Calling Hour will be held from 1:00PM until the hour of the service.Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 15th.
