November 5, 1943 ~ December 11, 2024

Resided in: South Berwick, Maine

Our beloved “Jeanne” Herrick passed away on November 11th, 2024. Born Jeanette Marie Herrick on November 5th (29 or so years ago), to the late Charles & Esther (Proctor) Herrick in Henniker, NH. Jeanne went to hairdressing school after graduating high school. However quickly decided it was not for her. Her passion was in helping people. After earning her Nursing Degree (LPN) she worked at Frisbee Memorial in Rochester as an ICU/surgical nurse and later head nurse at Mainstay Nursing Home in Sanford. In her early 40’s she went back to school to earn her BS in Criminal Justice. She proudly worked at the Bail Project in Portland assisting low level offenders avoid jail time by helping them find the personal and vocational resources to turn their lives for the better and reintegrate themselves into society. She was passionate about her role in this program she helped develop to give them a second chance. FInally being a DEEP instructor for many years in York County. Throughout her life she had a passion for the plight of the American Indians. Working on the Passamaquoddy Reservation in Maine and at the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation in Connecticut was one of her proudest achievements. Practicing as a Probation Officer for many years. Truly a public servant working to better the people in her community. She was a small person with a large zest for life. She did nothing small, except standing at 4’11”. A large personality made apparent by the love of animal prints, gaudy glasses, bold scarves, unique vehicles, and special attention paid to her wild hair. She thoroughly enjoyed what life had to offer… good music, cream with a little coffee and spending quality time with loved ones. Jeanne joins her parents Charles & Esther (Proctor) Herrick, siblings Harvey Herrick & Leona Henderson, son Keith Gilpatrick, Jr., and grandson Harold “Harley” Cole II. She is survived by brother John Herrick of Bellevue Washington, children Melissa Gallant of Sanford Maine & Corinna Cole of Lebanon Maine. And many, many dearly beloved Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews and friends. Special Thanks to the Staff and Residents at Berwick Estates in South Berwick Maine for their kindness and the amazing care they provided for Jeanne. It was a wonderful place to spend her final years. A memorial service will be held at the Carll-Heald and Black Funeral Home on Saturday January 25 at 1:00pm. Persons attending are asked to wear animal prints in honor of Jeanne. Refreshments will be served at the Springvale Social Club, following the service.

  1. I had the joy of working with Jeanne when she served as our probation officer at the Penobscot Nation Judicial System and as the pretrial diversion officer at the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court. Her huge heart, infectious laugh, love for Guns and Roses, and life experience helped her connect to youth and adults. We found that the juveniles liked her so much that their friends would get themselves in trouble just so they could be sent to meet with her. She and I took a three-day trip by rail to a training in Palm Springs during the Rodney King riots which was unforgettable. She would give money to every unhoused person who asked her. I knew she wasn’t rich, so I asked her why she did it so often. She responded, “But for the grace of God, go I.” Jeanne walked the walk. I was deeply saddened to learn of her passing. May she rest in peace knowing the healing and joy she brought to so many. — Jill Tompkins, former Director, Penobscot Nation Judicial System and former Chief Judge, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court.
