George Ward, III

WESTBROOK, MAINE – George E. Ward III, affectionately known as Skip, Skipper, and Skippa, of Westbrook, passed away peacefully on the evening of April 14, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

Born in Portland on January 4, 1947, he was the son of George E. Ward Jr. and Phyllis (Jacobsen) Ward. He attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1965. Shortly thereafter, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving for four years, including two years in Vietnam.

Following his return home, George married his high school sweetheart, Nancy V. Jordan. Together they shared a loving marriage and built a life centered on family, raising two children.

George dedicated 24 years of service as a firefighter with the Portland Fire Department. Throughout his career, he formed lasting friendships with fellow firefighters, many of whom he considered extended family.

After his retirement from the fire department, George remained active and explored several different career paths, always valuing hard work and connection with others.

George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy V. Ward.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Amy Ward, and granddaughter, Kelsey Ward, of Gray; his son, Michael Ward, and his significant other, Angela, of Scarborough; his grandson, Michael, whom he raised; his significant other, Sophie; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Noah and Parker, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his brothers, David Ward of Scarborough and Peter Ward of Bangor, along with many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Hyacinth Church, 268 Brown St., Westbrook, Maine.
