Steven L. Sax

Portland – Steven L. Sax, 93, passed away on October 1, 2025, in Scarborough. Steven was born on August 19, 1932, in Syracuse, NY, son of the late Lee and Gladys (Quiggley) Sax.
Steven proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Following his service, he attended Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, where he earned his degree in Business Administration and, more importantly, met the love of his life, Jane Purviance. The two were married on April 4, 1958, and recently celebrated 67 years of marriage.
After graduation, Steven began his career with General Electric in Utica, NY. In 1969, he and his family moved to Red Beach, Maine, where he taught at Woodland Middle School, operated the family farm, and worked with the Almon H. Fogg Company. In 1986, Steven and Jane embarked on a new adventure, purchasing and running an inn in Middletown Springs, Vermont, until 1992. They then settled in New Concord, Ohio, where Steven worked at Salt Fork Lodge and Zanesville Technical College and became an active member of the New Concord United Methodist Church.
In 2014, Steven and Jane moved to Portland, Maine, where they became part of the Thornton Heights United Methodist Church community. Steven loved spending time outdoors and found his greatest joy in the presence of his family.
He will be remembered as a hardworking, devoted, and kind man who built a rich life rooted in family, faith, and service.
Steven was predeceased by his sister Sheila. He is survived by his wife, Jane Sax; three sons, Douglas and his wife Shawnee, David and Dana Sax; granddaughter Jennifer Sax; and many other beloved extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at 9:30am on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Thornton Heights United Methodist Church, 100 Westbrook St, South Portland; burial to follow at 2pm at Southern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, 83 Stanley Rd., Springvale.
Arrangements are under the direction of Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes of South Portland, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
