Robert E. “Gene” Hall
March 20, 2025 Age 81
Robert E. Hall, “Gene,” passed away on March 20, surrounded by family. Born in Somersworth, NH, Gene grew up in Berwick, ME, before moving to Sanford, ME, where he raised his family.
Gene was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Lucille Hall; his brothers, C. Michael Hall and A. Lawrence Hall; his brother-in-law, Paul Legere; and his mother and father-in-law, Marguerite and Leo Legere. He is survived by his wife, Edith (Legere) Hall; his daughter, Sheri Hall-Miller and her husband Raymond Miller; his son, Jason “Jake” Hall; his sister, E. Geralyn Hall and her husband David Pasinski; his brother, John Thomas Hall and his wife Joy Hall; his sister-in-law, Pauline Legere; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family. Gene is also survived by his beloved cats, Fritz and Little One.
Gene had an unending passion for learning and many interests. He loved nature, fishing, hunting, and history. His hobbies were as varied as they were numerous. Gene could often be found teaching someone how to tie flies, hunting with family, crafting custom fly rods, or creating unique items like baskets, a kitchen table, or a cat stand. He was also an excellent cook, with a love for preparing meals and experimenting with new recipes.
Known for his offbeat, witty sense of humor, Gene delighted in quirky turns of phrase. He often answered “fair-da-middling” when asked how he was doing, and he never missed an opportunity to greet someone with “a cheery good morning.”
Gene returned to college to earn his associate’s degree from Macintosh College in the 1990’s. He worked in a variety of jobs throughout his life. He may be best remembered for his time at Wasco, or Dave’s Dugout, where he supported local hunters and fishermen. He retired as a curatorial assistant at Harvard University’s Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments, a job he truly enjoyed.
Gene built lifelong friendships and befriended anyone he met. Whether he was chatting with neighbors while tending his zinnias or garlic, or running into long-lost acquaintances at the grocery store, Gene was always happy to swap stories and catch up on life.
A celebration of Gene’s life will take place at the Black-Heald Walker Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, on April 5 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to share their stories and enjoy light fare in his memory.

Dear Edith, Jake and Sheri, I am so sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. He was a sweet man with a great sense of humor. Take care of yourselves my prayers are with you.

Gene was the oldest cousin of our family and he treated all of us like we were important to him, no matter where we fell in the pecking order. He always had a story to share, and he was a naturalist and a natural born teacher. I learned so much from him . Gene was, and is, loved by his family.
Gene, I will always remember your warm smile and that special twinkle you had in your eye when someone would mention anything to do with family, hunting or fishing. Thank you for all the special memories you and your whole family has given me over the years. I’ll never forget your mom’s warm homemade bread, it was so delicious. Rest in peace my friend and don’t go catching all the fish before I get there.
To the Hall family … My sincerest sympathy with the Loss of your Father , brother , Uncle ….
After my Pop and my uncles, Gene was my first family hero . He was self assured had that ready smile and just seemed so cool , standing there hands in his pockets ,rocking on his toes, again that big ole’ smile. I see him like that right now ! I wondered if I could ever have that swag ! He was a truly good man , and when I was little he would “sometimes” let me tag along , into “the swamp” for a walk or best yet a canoe paddle, an adventure … he always saw the things in nature that most of us miss , and was happy to share that gift. It was a learning experience every time I got to go !
He also had that gift of the story teller ( I think a family tradition ! ) , which along with that great baritone voice, would hold you until …….that dry humor would often leave you smiling at the end !
I will always have the things he taught me … I’m sure so many others will as well !
It was always a great pleasure to be around him… he will be both missed and remembered !

Gene, our paths as step-cousins didn’t cross as often as they should have, but I have a memory of very long ago when you were working on the steeple of a church in South Berwick. I would sometimes stand a distance away and watch, hoping my being there would prevent you from falling! Another, very dear memory, was around 2010 when my mom lived in Sanford, was taken to the hospital and needed a ride home. I was a great distance out of town with a cell phone not working, and Mom felt able to call you for a ride, which I hear you so willingly provided. Thank you for being you, Gene!
