South Portland – Dana R. Michaud, 85, passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 9, 2025. Dana was born on March 3, 1939, in Ashland. Dana moved to South Portland in 1956, where he built a life defined by love, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Shortly after relocating, Dana enlisted in the Air National Guard on October 22, 1957, serving for three years. On May 28, 1960, he married the love of his life, Maureen Grimaldi. Just over a year later, history unfolded—the Berlin Wall was built on August 13, 1961, and in September of that year, Dana was called back to military service to assist with the crisis in Germany. He was incredibly proud of this time in his life, often sharing stories about the men he served with and these experiences that shaped him. Dana was many things—a devoted family man, a patriot, a teacher, a coach, and a steadfast friend. Growing up in a tight-knit farming community, he learned the values of hard work and family at an early age. On family trips back to his hometown, he would share stories of his childhood, pointing out the places where he lived and played. Dana grew up in a farming community where he learned the skills to become a butcher; he would bring those skills to the 20th Century Market in Portland, and later, Shaw’s and Martin’s Foods. He transitioned to a role as a USDA Inspector before moving on to the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired as a dedicated mail handler and shop steward. Dana’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially during hunting trips. He passed down his passion for hunting and fishing to his sons, sharing unforgettable adventures at their uncle’s camp in Northern Maine and their own camp in Atkinson. Months before each trip, Dana would excitedly talk about the upcoming season. Their adventures together —along with the legendary poker games—made for excellent stories for sharing. Beyond his love for the outdoors, Dana made a lasting impact on his community through coaching. He dedicated himself to South Portland Little League, not only coaching but also serving on the South Portland National Board of Directors. He loved working with the kids, forging friendships with parents, umpires, and fellow coaches that endured for years. It wasn’t uncommon for former players to reach out on Facebook, sending him birthday wishes and sharing memories of their time on his team. The only way to truly sum up Dana’s life is love; he loved deeply, gave selflessly, and made time for the people who mattered most. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Dana is predeceased by his parents and stepfather; brother, Richard Michaud; and grandson, TJ Michaud. Dana is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maureen (Grimaldi) Michaud; and their sons, Tim and his wife Lori Bowring Michaud, and Michael Michaud and his fiancé Allison; grandchildren, Caitlin and her husband Josh, Matthew and his wife Katie, Joseph and his fiancé Erin, Gabrielle and her wife Ally, and Benjamin and his fiancé Dima; great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Lenny, Timothy, Mac, and Simon. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the first responders from the South Portland Fire Department for their dedication, care, and support. Services for Dana will be held in private with his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dana’s memory to Highland Memorial Cemetery, The Military Flag Fund, 18 Augusta St. South Portland, ME 04106.
