Lionel 'Nel' G. Lemay, 79, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Wednesday October 21, 2009. Born in Sanford, he was a son of the late Wilfred and Florence (Guillemette) Lemay. He attended Holy Family and Notre Dame Schools.He served in the Army National Guard for seven years.A hardworking man and a great father, he always provided for his family and friends. Prior to retiring from Pratt & Whitney in 1995 he had worked at the Allied Chemical Co. in Saco, Limerick Footwear and the former Simplex Wire & Cable in Dover. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing, which earned him the nickname of 'snout shot'. He enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends at his camp in Danforth.He is predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Florence Lemay.He is survived by his loving family, Thomas Lemay and his wife; Lisa of Sanford, William Lemay and his wife, Sylvie of Waterboro; Diane Chabot and her husband, Rick of Durham; Lisa Willis and her husband, Joe of Springvale; Laurie Smith and her husband, Brian of Sanford; Edna Chapman of Springvale, Craig Chapman of Springvale and close family friend, who was like a son to him, Kevin Ham of Wells. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew and Daniel Chabot, Christopher and Jeffrey Lemay, Tiyana LaPanne, Cortney Baker and Kendra Smith who was also his best friend and four great grandchildren. He is survived by six brothers, John Lemay of Springvale, Alcide Lemay of Lebanon, Richard Lemay of Springvale, Louis Lemay of Waterboro, Bernard Lemay of Sanford, David Lemay of South Carolina and two sisters, Majella Provencher of Sanford, Celine Lariviere of Biddeford, as well as many dear friends.The family would like to thank Dr. Maged Khoory, the York Oncology Treatment Center and the many doctors, nurses and service people who cared for him during the past five years with his courageous battle with cancer.Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church in Springvale.
