John Meehan, 75, of Portland, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024. Born in Portland’s West End on July 23, 1949, John was a beloved member of the community, known for his generous spirit, unwavering faith, and devotion to his family.
John served his country with honor as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, embodying the values of loyalty and service throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1969, and cherished his childhood memories of being an altar boy at St. Dominic's.
For over 36 years, John dedicated himself to his work at Maine Medical Center, where he retired in 2013. Even in retirement, his commitment to service continued as he worked at events for Merrill Auditorium, Maine Celtics, Sea Dogs, the Civic Center, Thompson’s Point – R&R/Beowulf, and as a greeter for cruise ships at the pier. John was a familiar face and a friendly presence, always ready to lend a helping hand.
John was a man of deep faith, living by the Golden Rule and consistently putting others before himself. He had a special gift for making people smile, especially children, with his playful Donald Duck voice. His humility and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Family was at the heart of everything John did, extending his love and support not just to his immediate family but also to his extended relatives and friends. He had a sparkle in his eye and a warmth that made everyone feel cherished.
John was the loving and devoted husband of Norma for nearly 50 years. They were each other’s best friends, and their marriage was a testament to love, faith, and strong communication. Together, they faced life’s challenges with grace, always working to know each other better, and remained a true partnership—a package deal. Norma will deeply miss her best friend, the love of her life.
John was also a proud “Papa” to his granddaughters Alana and Ayla, who were the apples of his eye. His legacy of love, humility, and service to others will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John Meehan will be remembered for his loyalty, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him to live with the same kindness and compassion that he so freely gave to others.

To my dear father in law, I will
always remember our long bike rides, walks, weeding, church on Sundays at 7am, your generosity and infectious smile. You showed me how to maintain a lawn with zero dandelions and how to create the best fairy garden around. It was heartfelt enduring your continued pride of homeownership. I am forever grateful for you welcoming me into your heart and home even while being a New York Yankees fan and also welcoming my Ayla Rose. You have made my heart smile with a forever imprint of the true meaning of kindness. You will be greatly missed. We love you! Untill we meet again!!! ❤️🙏 Go Bruins!!!
He is my step papa who I will miss very much.
Uncle John was the sweetest, kindest, funniest, loving uncle who will be dearly missed.
Dearest Norma, Denise, Sheila, Mike and extended family, I am so very sorry to hear of John’s death. Being a family friend for so many years I had the privilege of spending many happy occasions with John and all of you. John with his ready smile and easygoing and helpful personality will surely be missed but hopefully in time the happy memories will help you push through the sadness.
You are all in my prayers. Love to you all. Diane Lambert

Loving, caring, fun and full of life
He loved to read and listen to his scanner
People would walk up to him and tell him he looked Tommy Lee Jones.
That he loved to meet people and make them feel welcome. No matter if it was just in a brief passing. Through this kind act,
He may not have remembered them, but they always remembered him.
His family, friends and neighbors. His dog Abbey until she passed.
My Husband and Best Friend
He loved to work out side. His lawn was plush and green.
But he would have it mowed it 7 days if I had let him.
I worked with both John and Norma for many many years. John became a friend through work, We would have great conversations at work and while I hadn’t seen him much since retiring we would occasionally bump into each other at ihop where John and Norma and I would get caught up on how our busy lives were going. John will be sadly missed.
I just saw this sad text today about John’s passing. I am so sorry to hear about this.
