STANDISH Wayne S. Newbegin, 75, of Standish, passed away peacefully Thursday , May 14, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Wayne was born in Portland on September 29, 1939. He attended Portland Schools and graduated from Deering High School, Class of 1957. He married the love of his life,Linda Campbell on October 27, 1982. Wayne served his country for over 39 years in the military. He spent the majority of his military career in the Maine Army National Guard, 133rd Engineer Battalion, but also served in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard. Over his career, he worked as a Master Sergeant and as an Operation Sergeant at Joint Force Headquarters. In addition to his extensive military career, Wayne was active in his community. He served the Town of Standish in several different capacities, including a Town Councilman, on the Ordinance Committee, and the Beach Committee. In addition, he was active in Standish politics. Wayne was also active in several other organizations and activities. He was a member and former Commander of the American Legion Westbrook Post 197, Adjutant for the American Legion Standish Memorial Post 128, and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Standish. He also owned a construction business which ended in 1982. He was an avid golfer and a craftsman, often working in his wood shop to make heirloom furniture for his family and friends. Wayne enjoyed ice fishing, playing poker with his buddies, traveling with Linda and spending time with friends. Above all else, Wayne adored his family, especially his grandchildren, Jessica, Thomas, Mary, Richard, Stephen, Olivia, Emily, Emilio, Elijah, and Michelle. As well as four great-grandchildren, Liam, Xander, Evan and Willow. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is predeceased by his father, Lee Newbegin, and brother, Dana Newbegin. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda (Campbell) Newbegin of Standish; daughters, Jean Marie Southard and husband David of Gray, Alicia Wilkinson of Standish and Theresa Shaw and husband Peter of Gorham; step-son, Jeffrey Vaughn and fianc Eva Blake of Limington; brother, Lee Terry Newbegin and wife Betty of FL. Also survived by niece and nephews, Jamie Newbegin of FL, Richard Newbegin and wife Mary of PA, and Kevin Cidre and wife Becky of Windham. Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 from 2-4 6-8PM at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:00am at the Funeral Home.
