Timothy M. Flynn

timothy flynn
Peaks Island - Timothy Michael Flynn passed away doing what he loved on Casco Bay on Friday, December 11, 2020, aboard his lobster boat, The Dottie Mae. Tim was well known and very loved. He grew up and resided on Peaks Island and was an experienced lobsterman. He attended Peaks Island Elementary School and graduated from Portland High School. He was steady, quiet, and someone you could always count on. Tim was an active-duty firefighter who started his career in 1986. He was the senior-most firefighter within the Portland Fire Department and very well respected by his peers. Tim's father was PFD's Fire Chief, and Tim served alongside his brothers Captain Daniel Flynn, Deputy Chief William Flynn, and Lieutenant Patrick Flynn. His absence now means for the first time in 70 years, there is not an active-duty Flynn on the Portland Fire Department. Tim was a very proud father to his two grown sons, TJ and Zach, beaming at the chance to get to talk about them. Tim is survived by his two sons, TJ and Zach and their mother, Nancy Wright; his siblings, Kathleen Newell and husband Stan, William and wife Nancy, Patrick and fiancee Lori (all of Peaks Island), Daniel and wife Melissa of Portland; and half-sibling, Sandy Merrow of Concord, NH. Uncle Timmy will be deeply missed by his nieces and nephews Amanda O'Brien, Shellbe Flynn, Connor Flynn, Samantha Flynn, Ted Merrow, Holly Merrow, and Matt Merrow. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Dot Flynn, and his oldest brother, John Flynn. His family extended beyond blood relative - he will be missed dearly by his fire department family, his whole Peaks Island family, his Island Lobster Company family where he held the title of 'Chief of Security,' and his Portland lobstering and fishing community family. The family would like to thank the staff at Maine Medical Center, the Portland Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, Casco Bay Lines, the local boat community who sprung into action, Thomas Werner, Fogg Boat Works, and the Portland Water Taxi. Visiting Hours celebrating Tim's life will be held from 2-6PM on Thursday, December 17 at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Conforming to current guidelines, capacity will be monitored and face coverings are required. The family requests guests and visitors to bring an ornament to be placed on the Christmas Tree at the Funeral Home to provide the family with memories of Tim in the future as they decorate their trees. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 11AM. To watch the livestream of Tim's funeral, please visit www.facebook.com/conroytullywalker. In honor of Tim, he will have one last "lap" around the Island after Mass. A burial in celebration of Tim's life will take place in the summer. 7. To the Flynn family, thank you for sharing a great guy with those of us in the fire service. I was honored to know Chief Flynn (dad) in his retirement and to work with the four firefighting brothers. They are gentlemen and superb public safety heroes. Tim, with his quiet demeanor and subtle smirk, was good to me and good for me. I appreciate those opportunities when we worked together and the friendship we developed. Tim certainly knew the waters of Casco Bay and so easily identified on a nighttime run to Peaks, that it was green can 1 we “grazed” with the Fireboat while passing House Island. No harm, no foul. Tim did not bat an eye! We’ll miss this great guy. Best regards to family and friends.

  14. One of my favorite Timmy memories was at a TEIA Club Cabaret, a few years back. This quiet, gentle giant ripped it up on the dance floor with me to AC/DC like no ones business. He always made me laugh, while his presence always made me feel safe. What a special person, there was no one like Uncle Timmy. -Sherrin Vail

  15. I thought I was an early riser because in almost all stations I worked at, I was usually the first one up. However, when I was working at Munjoy, I’d get up around 4:30-5ish, go out to the dayroom, and always find Tim, Keith Jordan, and Bob Gilfillan all drinking an early morning cuppa joe. It must be a lobsterman thing getting up early like that. Tim and Keith both covered at the boat, but whoever was covering down there, they would escape to the hill for that routine early morning coffee. My condolences to his family and large circle of friends.

  16. These photos are great. Mind if we use some of them for the wake? Thank you so much. I can almost hear his voice and laugh looking at them.

    – Amanda O’Brien

  17. Tim, you will be very much missed on Peaks and by your family. Beth and I send our deepest to the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Frank & Beth Childs

  18. I’m very sad for the Flynn family. Timmy was a great guy. We grew up on the island together. Friends all through school and graduated together. Although I hadn’t seen Timmy for years, I feel the pain of the island community with this lose. RIP my friend. Condolences to the entire Flynn family.
