Rita N. Maiorano

PORTLAND - Rita N. Maiorano, 71, of Murray Street, died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Baron Center following a long illness; her loving family was by her side. Rita was born on September 4, 1942 in Portland to an Irish family of seven. Her family later settled in South Portland. After graduating from South Portland High School in 1960, she began working in the insurance field at Unum Mutual Insurance. On September 16, 1967, Rita married her Willard Beach sweetheart, Thomas Maiorano. Rita left Unum in 1968 to start her family and settled into her role as mother and business partner. She was the glue that held the family together. In December, 1971 she was instrumental in the start up and running of Maiorano Electric, Inc and again in 1982 with Vieste Properties. Rita continued to assist with her husband's businesses as well as returning to the insurance field. After retiring Rita enjoyed being a grandmother, Sunday dinners on Murray Street and touring Europe. She was a loyal communicant at St. Peter's Church in Portland and a member of the Sacred Heart Sodality. Rita is predeceased in death by her parents Anna and Michael Conley and brothers, Phil Conley, Thomas Conley and Frederick Conley as well as her sister Anna Flaherty. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Thomas Maiorano, daughters Theresa M. Sawyer of Portland and Janice Maiorano St. John of South Portland, son-in-law Chris St. John and grandchildren; Julia St. John, Christopher St. John, Erin Sawyer, Joseph St. John and Sophia St. John. Two sisters, Virginia Brogan of South Portland and Katherine Susie Hayden of NH. She is also survived by her special brother in law Edward Flaherty and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Ann Marie and her amazing staff at BC2 for the exceptional care provided to Rita. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Prayers will be recited at 8:15am at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 followed by an 9:00am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peters Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland.
