Richard M. Tourigny

April 26, 1962 ~ February 3, 2015
Scarborough- Richard M. Tourigny, 52, of Scottow Hill Road, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at his home following a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer. His loving family was by his side. He was born in Portland, Maine on April 26, 1962 the son of Maurice J. and Marie M. Ouellette Tourigny. He graduated from Scarborough High School in 1980, attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and graduated with an Associate Degree from the University of Southern Maine. Richard owned and operated his own automotive repair shop in Scarborough for many years. He later went to work selling real estate for Johnson Realty and worked part-time digging clams whenever he could. He was a very generous person who always put others first including moving into his parents home in order to care for them. He was always working on a project, repairing or fixing something or finding a way to make things happen for others when it seemed no else could. Richard had a very strong work ethic and would always strive to achieve more. In his spare time he was passionate about working out at the gym, a workout ethic which many attribute to his survival of a stage IV diagnosis of cancer for more than eighteen months. He enjoyed outdoor activities including running, snowmobiling, bicycling and spending time with family and friends. Richard was a very spiritual person who was involved in the ministry at the Little House of Prayer in Biddeford. He was predeceased by an infant sister Maria Tourigny. He is survived by his parents Maurice and Marie Tourigny of Scarborough; one sister Susanne M. and her husband Richard V. Voight of Cumming, GA. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 13 from 9:30 to 10:30am at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 10:15am on Friday, followed by a 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Tonight I decided I would try to find my childhood friend, Rick Tourigny, by searching on Facebook (without success) and then I did a google search and sadly found his obituary and regret I had not done this a few years earlier. Everything I read here told me he still remained the same great nice person I knew and I was happy to know this. His parents whom I also remember and his girlfriend have my deepest sympathy in regard to their loss.

RICHARD WAS A FRIEND YOU COULD COUNT ON NO MATTER WHAT WAS HAPPENING. I MET RICHARD AT THE LITTLE HOUSE OF PRAYER SERVICE. ON THE DAY BEFORE THAT SERVICE. A FELLOW KNIGHT AND FRIEND FROM FLORIDA CALLED ME ASKING MY HELP TO GET THE BUILDINGS SOLD FOR THE MONKS THAT HAD MOVED TO FLORIDA. RICHARD A TALKED TO ME AT THE SERVICE AND HE STATED HE WAS THE LISTING AGENT FOR THAT BUILDING . GUESS WHAT! THE BUILDING GOT SOLD AND IT WAS A PERSON THAT I MET WITH ONE DAY AND RICHARD WAS THERE. THIS WAS OUR LORDMAKING AMAZING THINGS HAPPEN ON EARTH. RICHARD ALWAYS SAID HE WISHED HE HAD MET ME YEARS AGO AND I AGREED. RICHARD IS NOW RESTING IN THE ARMS OF THE LORD . I HOPE RICHARD IS BURIED WITH MY KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ROSARY THAT I GAVE HIM WHEN I LEARNED OF HIS CANCER. TO HIS FAMILY AND HIS GIRL FRIEND (CATHY) I OFFER MY PRAYERS .

What a wonderful picture of a wonderful guy! There was no one quite like Rick! My daughters and I have known Rick, his sister Suzzane, mother Peggy and father Maurice since he was a youngster living next door to us in Scarborough. He became, not only a wonderful friend but was my trusted and faithful mechanic for over 25 years. He was always upbeat, friendly, and cheerful with his warm smile and happy laughter. He was a devout follower of his Lord. I have no doubt that Heaven has been made richer by his presence.

Our sincere heartfelt prayers are before your family. Rick is a wonderful Christian man and I know he is living fully in God’s eternal home.Having to say good-by to our son at a tender age of 24, Jeff and I know of this journey. I find refuge in John 3:16.”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”It is through my faith I know we are not alone and loved by no one greater than our God.May you find comfort in these words.Claire Labrecque

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Words can’t express what is weighing on my heart. As a mom myself now I just can’t even imagine. Please if there is anything at all I can do for your family feel free to call or email me and I will do what I can. Richard ( Rick) has always been one of my favorite people and a kindred spirit. I will always think back on the times Ses and I spent with him with a smile.

I will always remember and be grateful for the love and kindness I received from Rick, Maurice and Peggy during my college years and the years that followed. Behind the tears of loss at this time, I can’t help but smile at all the wonderful memories I have of Rick and the whole ‘campus ministry gang’ at USM. Rick loved to tease us and make us laugh, but mostly loved to watch out for us to be sure we were safe and that we made good decisions. He ‘kept us honest’ when it came to living the Catholic faith, always challenging us to be true to our conscience, to ourselves and mostly to God. He always put the needs of others above his own, and never hesitated to make a sacrifice in order to help a friend in need. On more than one occasion, he came to the rescue when Kathy, Fran, Marsha or I got ourselves into a bind, but wasn’t the type to say “I told you so.” He and his parents also chauffeured all of us around on countless occasions, so that we could attend retreats, healing services, and other events that further strengthened our faith. He lived the faith every day of his life and helped others to do the same and his love and friendship was a great gift for which I will always be thankful.
