Richard George Ives

Richard George Ives passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Portland, Maine on November 26, 1929, and was the son of the late Muriel Ives Warrington and George "Kirby" Warrington. He attended Portland High School and The United States Merchant Maritime Academy in New York. As a young man Mr. Ives wanted to serve his country so in 1944 fabricated his age and attempted to sign up for the United States Merchant Marine. His real age at the time was 15 and he was rejected. However, he was quickly employed by the Norwegian and Panamanian Merchant Marine, and then by the US Merchant Marine. For the next 50 years he worked in a profession he loved, traveling to many countries around the world. After retiring, he became an avid book reader and master of the crossword puzzle. He enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family, and watching baseball games. He was an Atlanta Braves fan! Mr. Ives was a retried member of the National Maritime Union and a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Justina DiMillo Ives and their children, Sharon Fournier of Portland, Dr. Jeanette Ives Erickson and her husband Paul of Boston, Richard Ives of Fort Lauderdale, Gregory Ives and his wife Deanna Fagone Ives of Portland, and Judith Ives of Boston. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren who fondly referred to him as Tatone; Catherine, Geanna, Charles, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Olivia and Nicholas, as well as 6 great-grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild, Cousin Pamela Ives, a very large extended family, and numerous long time friends. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated 11:00 am, Tuesday, at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 279 Congress St., Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
