Scarborough - Patricia A. "Patsy" Driscoll, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
Born in Portland on March 16, 1930, Pat was the daughter of the late Joseph and Madeline (Cronin) Maloney. She grew up in South Portland and attended South Portland High School. When she was a teenager, she met the love of her life, Harold T. Driscoll, while roller skating in Portland. Little did they know, that was the beginning of a lifetime of together. They were married on April 22, 1950 at Scott Airforce Base in Illinois and raised their family in Scarborough. When their children were young, Pat stayed at home to ensure they were well cared for and well fed. As they got older, Pat volunteered for the Scarborough Canteen and went to work for Captain Newirk's Restaurant as a hostess. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at Captain Newirk's, and especially enjoyed visiting with the many people who would walk through the door. In addition, she was also employed at the Family Patch Garden Center, Fairchild's Semi-Conductor and Highland Avenue Green Houses.
However, the work she cherished the most was at Cheverus High School in the cafeteria. During her 18 years at Cheverus, she was able to make several life-long connections with the staff and students. A very humble and generous woman, Patsy always made sure she had a few extra bucks with her to pay for the lunch of a student who didn't have money. In turn for her devotion and support of Cheverus, especially the basketball team, she was awarded the "Fan of the Year Award", had a yearbook dedicated to her, and was given her own special seat for the games.
Pat had several hobbies and interest throughout the years. She enjoyed her trips to Foxwoods where she always won big, collecting owl figurines, reading, and doing word searches with the large print. She was an avid sports fan, often watching the Red Sox with the TV volume on high while simultaneously listening to the Portland Sea Dogs game on the radio. However, she will be remembered most for her love of family, especially her grandchildren.
Pat loved to host Thanksgiving and Christmas, feeding her family with food which was made completely by scratch. She was a great cook, but an even better baker. Her apple pies were the most coveted desert at any family gathering. Dr. Alan Wolfelt said, "Food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate." In the case of Pat Driscoll, the love she had for her family was expressed in many ways, especially through food.
She is predeceased by her husband, Harold Driscoll; daughter, Theresa Ann Gunther; son, Daniel J. Driscoll; siblings, Joseph, Robert, Phillip, Edward and Madelyn.
Patsy is survived by her children, Donna Stevenson and husband Jeffrey of South Portland, Thomas J. Driscoll of Portland, Robert J. Driscoll and wife Terri of Westbrook, and Paul H. Driscoll of Fort Pierce, FL. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret Hogan of Yarmouth and Mary-Jo Storms of Portland. Grammy Pat adored her 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; she is also survived by her best friend, Shirlee Smith.
Visiting Hours celebrating Pat's remarkable life will be held on Thursday, January 3 from 4-7PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Funeral Service honoring her memory will be held on Friday, January 4 at 11AM at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. What a truly beautiful woman, Patricia was. I didn’t know her but, knew her son, Paul Driscoll. She is at peace now, with our loving God. May the family find comfort, knowing she is at peace and no pain. Madeline and Russ Baker
