Nellie E. Glidden

SOUTH PORTLAND Nellie Bakiewicz Glidden, 92, a resident of Country Village Assisted Living in Casco, formerly of South Portland, died peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2015 at the facility under the loving care of staff members and Androscoggin Hospice. Nellie was born in Portland on November 19, 1922 to Ignacy S. and Magdalena M. Dobrowolski Bakiewicz. She spent her youth in the Polish Community on Portlands West End, as a member of Saint Louis Church, attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School. In 1944 she married Arnold Glidden at Saint Louis Church. They relocated to South Portland where they resided until his death in 1963. Nellie was a homemaker with wonderful talents for cooking, gardening, and crocheting. She played an important role in the lives of her loving and caring family members. As one niece recently stated, she loved us, taught us, played with us, helped us and believed in us. She truly was a special aunt. After the death of her husband at an early age, she worked for many years processing seafood on Portlands waterfront then moved onto BM Baked Bean Company, and spent several years at Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland before retiring. Nell spent many enjoyable days watching her favorite television shows including Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, along with playing Rummy and Bingo every chance she got. In addition to her husband, Nellie was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Dickson and Dorothy Dyro, and two brothers Edward and Michael Bakiewicz. She is survived by 3 generations of loving and caring nieces and nephews. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday from 5-8PM at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the Funeral Home on Thursday at 8:15AM followed by a 9AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Louis Church, 279 Danforth Street, Portland. Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Mrs. Glidden at the Dickson house on Vincent St. I grew up with John & Betsy Dickson.

Aunt Nell was a special person to both of us. I have many fond and lasting memories and will always have a special place in my heart for Aunt Nell. The many happy times on Carter Street with Aunt Nell busy in the background and always the dry, profound, delightful comment, followed by that knowing grin!
