Mildred Elizabeth Burke

SOUTH PORTLAND - Mildred Elizabeth Burke, 89, of Spurwink Ave., died peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2014 with her loving family by her side. Mildred was born in Portland, Maine on July 8, 1925 the daughter of William H. and Lucille Labelle O'Donnell. She attended local schools and graduated from Cathedral High School in the class of 1943. On January 28, 1946 she married Edward J. Burke. Mildred worked at the Portland Public library from 1943 to 1946. She worked for eleven years at the Eastland Park Hotel doing banquet work before going to work full time at Maine Medical Center, working in patient accounts and billing, a career which lasted more than twenty years. She was a lifelong communicant of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a member of Holy Cross Sodality and was active on many committees within the church. Mildred was predeceased by her husband Edward of sixty seven years on February 2, 2013 and a daughter Elizabeth Burke. She is survived by two daughters Carolyn Lane of Augusta and Diane Bonville of South Portland; eight grandchildren Brian Spencer of South Portland, Todd Rutherford of South Portland, Alison Rutherford Martin and husband Miguel of Midlothian, VA, Tressa King-Libby and husband Chuck Libby of south Portland, Alan Bonville and partner Jessica Childs of South Portland, Amanda Greene of Auburn and Adam Bonville and partner Brittni Wishart of Saco, Melissa Lorenzo of Grass Valley; sixteen great grandchildren Jenna Weitzell of Auburn, Zachary, and Degan Weitzell of Ocala, FL, Lucas Griffin, Jr of Auburn, William, Jack and Katie Martin of Midlothian, VA, Justin King of South Portland, Josh, Jonny, Joey and Nick Libby of South Portland, Adrienne Childs of West Paris, Eli and Emily Bonville of south Portland, and Arabelle Bonville of Saco; two sisters Helen Kalesnick of South Portland and Margaret O'Brien of Old Orchard Beach; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and caregivers of VNA Hospice for the kindness they gave to their mother. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. Prayers will be recited at the chapel at 10:15am on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 followed by an 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.Online condolences may be expressed below.
