Resided in:
Brunswick, ME
Marypat Bowen passed away peacefully at home in Brunswick, Maine on July 28, 2020, surrounded by those who loved her most. She was an incredible mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend. She lit up a room with her radiant smile. She loved fiercely -- you always felt warm and completely protected by her selfless love. Her family was her life and she would do anything for them. Marypat had a creative spirit, enjoying such pursuits as gardening (she was a certified Master Gardener), quilting, knitting, and painting. She cared deeply about the environment and wanted to make the world a better and cleaner place. She loved living by the ocean and always said she would have been a marine biologist in another life. Proud of her Irish heritage, Marypat traveled often to Ireland to visit her relatives in County Mayo. As a teacher, she made a meaningful difference in the lives of so many children and their families throughout her almost 40 years of teaching. She believed that all children should be able to realize their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. One of her favorite quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt represents her best: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
Born in Syracuse, NY, Marypat was the daughter of Eugene and Rita Walker. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1970 and earned her Bachelor of Arts from LeMoyne College in 1974. She earned her Master's of Counseling Psychology from Boston College. By the end of her career in 2014, her coursework was the equivalent of a doctoral degree. After graduating from BC in 1976, she lived in Cambridge, MA, and worked for New England Medical Center as a court advocate and later taught at a number of educational institutions in Boston. In 1983, she married Tom Bowen and moved back to Syracuse. She taught in the Auburn, NY school system before staying home to raise her only daughter, Emily, who was born in 1984. It was always Marypat's dream to live in Maine when her family moved to the state in 1993 where she returned to teaching as a special education teacher in the Bremen Schools and then as a fifth grade teacher for the Pownal Schools. She taught second, third, and fifth grades in the Yarmouth School District from 1997 to 2014, when she retired.
Marypat is survived by her husband, Tom; her daughter, Emily; her son-in-law, Michael; her grandson, Henry; her sisters, Terri, Rita, Colleen, and Sheila; her brothers, Gene and Dan; as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins and friends whose lives were made better by knowing her and being loved by her. Marypat is predeceased by her brother, Michael, and her parents, Eugene and Rita.
A closed funeral service will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to "The Marypat Bowen Memorial Fund" at St. Jude's Children's Hospital by clicking the link below.

My daughter, Emily Parker, loved Mrs. Bowen. She was a favorite teacher of hers in the Yarmouth school system. She was so lucky to have her one year and then a second year when they had team teaching . She also started a garden next to her classroom outside. She was a wonderful person and sensitive teacher she will be missed by all.

Mary Pat /MP, was a dear friend and colleague of mine. I always knew that if I needed advice or just someone to talk to, she was there. She always had a calm , quiet presence and a ready smile! I never saw her as much as I would have liked at school because we were all so busy. But once retired, we were able to meet for long lunches and great knitting camaraderie. I will miss you MP!

Dear Tom and Emily, I was saddened to read Marypat’s obituary in Sunday’s paper. It was a beautiful tribute to her. I have very fond memories of working with Marypat at YES. Walking into her classroom was like walking into a sanctuary. She set the standard for creating a calm and cozy learning environment with her rocking chair, rug, lighting, creating a welcoming and safe classroom for her students. Along with our many conversations about teaching and learning, we shared our Irish heritage, of which we were both proud. Marypat was a lovely lady who lived and taught with passion and compassion. I hope your many memories will bring you peace. …And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. With sympathy, Ellen Honan

Dear Bowen family, I am sad to learn of the loss of your dear wife, mother, grandmother… a lovely woman. In the brief time that we were neighbors in North Yarmouth, I admired Marypat, and enjoyed her company. She was a friendly and kind woman, and I was sorry when she and you, Tom, moved away. Your loving memories of her touched me deeply. My heart is with you as you journey through your grief. Her beautiful spirit will always be with you. Your friend, Sue Gerry

Mrs. Bowen was my, and my little sister’s, second grade teacher (2010 and 2014). Mrs. Bowen fostered a love for learning that has stayed with me for a decade now and will stay with me forever. She inspired me to want to become a teacher myself and I will be studying education at college this fall. Mrs. Bowen always has kind words for everyone and she would never hesitate to give me a hug if I was having a bad day. Thank you, Mrs. Bowen, for the kindness you have shown me throughout my childhood.

Thank you for your sweet tribute, Karen. It meant so much to have you at her service.

We are extremely saddened to read of Marypat’s passing. We will always remember her as the teacher who insisted every child say good morning and shake her hand as they entered her classroom. Her connection with students and parents was unsurpassed. The memory of her beautiful smile and compassionate heart will live with us forever. The White Family, formerly Yarmouth, ME
