Margaret A. "Peggy" Sterling

South Portland- Margaret A. "Peggy" Sterling, 84, of Preble Street died peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with her loving family gathered around her.
Peggy was born in Lewiston on December 27, 1932 the daughter of the late Carl and Hazel (Kenniston) Rowe. She attended local schools and graduated from Kent's Hill School in the class of 1949.
Peggy began her working career with the City of Portland where she met and married the love of her life Wallace R. "Wally" Sterling. They were married in Bingham on April 21, 1956 and together made their home and raised their family in South Portland.
Prior to working at Standard Register for many years, Peggy stayed at home to raise her family. She eventually joined the family business, Sterling Appraisal Company, as an administrative assistant for more than 25 years. She continued to serve on the Board of Directors until her death.
In her spare time she loved to go to the casino, all you needed to do was ask and Peggy was ready to go. Playing slot machines in Atlantic City or rubbing scratch tickets at home she was very lucky in winning. Dinners at the Bridgeway Restaurant or shopping trips were all a good excuse to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She was the resident baby sitter for many of her grandchildren and loved every minute of it, family was most important to her. Peggy will long be remembered as a loving, sweet, classy lady in style, fashion and demeanor. A family friend quoted "I will remember Peggy as a real spitfire, quick with a smile, witty comment and very generous".
She was predeceased by her husband Wally in 1990; a son, Wallace R. Sterling Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Lane; a brother, William "Bill" Rowe; a grandson, BJ Wayne. She is survived by a son, George and his wife Jill Koutalakis of Saco; four daughters, Mary-Margaret "Emmy" and her husband Dennis Wallace of West VA, Kimberly and her husband John Brennick of Windham, Lisa and her husband Mark Franz of Scarborough, Cheryl Bickford and her companion Scott Tame of South Portland; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visiting hours and a celebration of Peggy's life will be held on Thursday, October 19th from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. A funeral service will follow at 1pm at the Chapel with the Rev. Cindy Maddox officiating. Burial will follow in Black Point Cemetery, Scarborough.
