FALMOUTH – Judy Ann Tounge, 77, died on July 16, 2022, at Northern Light Mercy Hospital.
Judy was born on May 29, 1945, in Boston, MA to Henry and Ruth Smith. She moved to Maine as a child, growing up in the family home in Falmouth, ME. After graduating from the University of Southern Maine, Judy worked as an elementary school teacher, educating and inspiring second and third graders until she retired. Fiercely devoted to her family, Judy was the ultimate caregiver, supporting her parents as they aged, advocating for her son, Scott, encouraging her son, Brett, as he pursued a career in drug development, and loving her husband, Timothy Pennell, and her granddaughter, Niamh Stull, unconditionally.
Charming and gregarious, Judy loved to entertain. In particular, her Christmas parties were legendary. But she welcomed everyone—even friends of friends and groups of teenage girls—any day, any time, offering enough food to feed an army and, of course, wine. She even fed a menagerie of wildlife that included at one time, a duck, a skunk, and an opossum. She also enjoyed celebrating birthdays, sending friends and family members cards she had created on her iPad (she was very artistic), often featuring Tim or one of her cats dressed as Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. Self-described—very appropriately—as “feisty,” Judy was a force of nature; she will be missed beyond words.
Judy was predeceased by her son, Scott Tounge. She is survived by her husband, Timothy Pennell of Falmouth, ME; son, Brett Tounge, and granddaughter, Niamh Stull of Philadelphia, PA; and sister, Nancy Mason of Niantic, CT. A memorial service celebrating Judy’s life will be held on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at 10 AM at Burr Cemetery in Freeport, ME. In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations to HART Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Maine, Inc. PO Box 351302 Range Rd, Cumberland, ME, in honor of her love of animals.
Oh my friend Judy. How I will miss you! You have been a warrior for the last two years! I’ll never forget our daily lunches at RES. You & Ann Marie were my mental health team! And our days at SLSV were the best! You always knew how to “tell it like it is”. I will never forget you! Love, KATHY
When my family moved to So. Portland in 1951, Judy’s family were the first neighbors we met. We quickly became friends. Sister Nancy and I took dance lessons together. Once the Smiths moved to Falmouth we did not see each other as often. Judy and I managed to stay in touch for quite a few years as we both went into teaching, married, had children, and settled down. Judy took wonderful care of her children and parents over the years. Her great sense of humor and love of pets was special, and she will be greatly missed.
Sending my condolences to the family. Judy was my 3rd grade teacher over 40 years ago. I learned a lot from her and have been a nurse for 30 years. Praying for you all!
