John Jack J. McDonough

March 30, 1941 ~ April 12, 2017
South Portland- John "Jack" J. McDonough, 76, passed away a happy man on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 while playing a round of golf.
Born in Portland on March 30, 1941, Jack was the son of the late Martin and Rosemary (Maloney) McDonough. Upon graduating from Deering High School in 1959, Jack enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and couldn't wait to travel the world. However, rather than being shipped off to see the world, he was first stationed in South Portland. Throughout his career, he found himself in Alaska, Wisconsin, Ohio, Washington, and Boston. An experience that Jack was especially proud of while in the USCG is serving as a member of the Honor Guard detail for Robert F. Kennedy upon his assassination. In 2012, Jack was able to travel with Wreaths Across America to place a wreath upon his grave. When Jack retired, he did so in Maine and spent 24 years at the United States Postal Service.
In 1961, Jack married the love of his life, Patricia, and together they raised two children, Karen and Steven.
Jack was always a hard worker, but balanced his strong work ethic with his love of golfing especially at Willowdale Golf Club and hunting at the family camp. His proudest moment on the golf course was when he shot a hole in one while golfing with his son, Steven. However, Jack found the most joy in spending time with his family. He had wonderful memories of coaching his son's Little League team, taking family trips up to Camp and playing with the family dog, Tillie.
Jack was especially proud of his Irish heritage and was a loyal sports fan and especially enjoyed following high school basketball. Jack will be remembered as a very caring and compassionate person who had a great sense of humor, a desire to always help people and a man who enjoyed the ride.
In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his sister, Bobbie Hubbard, and brother, Tom McDonough.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia McDonough of South Portland; son, Steven McDonough of Portland and his son, Michael; daughter, Karen McLellan and husband Steve of Portland.
Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 9:15-11:15AM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12PM at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, PO Box 336, Westbrook, ME 04092 or the Salvation Army, 297 Cumberland Ave, Portland, ME 04101

When I first saw the obituary I thought of a friend from my youth in Brookline, MA, but obviously that was another Jack McDonough. Reading further, the strong Coast Guard connection was obvious. My first duty station in 1959 was the Cutter Barataria in Portland, followed by the Coos Bay. I don’t think our paths ever crossed, but from what I read: I wish they had! Please accept my condolences for your loss.
