Eileen Fontaine

PORTLAND – Eileen Fontaine, 67, passed away unexpectedly on July 9, 2024. Eileen was born in Portland, Maine, on June 15, 1957, the daughter of the late Henri O. and Irene E. (Mulkern) Fontaine. She attended Portland schools. Eileen grew up in the West End of Portland in a large Irish family with five sisters and seven brothers. She was close with her siblings and enjoyed spending time with them throughout her childhood and adult life. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved to listen to Irish music and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with her family. A lifelong resident of the West End, she was known to everyone for her friendly nature, kindness, and ever-present smile. She had a huge smile and an infectious joy for life. She will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known her. Eileen loved watching movies, listening to Bruno Mars, singing karaoke, spending days at Willard Beach, and reading. She would often say to her children and grandchildren, “Reading is knowledge, and knowledge is power.” If she wasn’t spending time with her family or cleaning, you would most likely find her reading a book. She cherished heart-shaped items, often collecting them herself or receiving photos from loved ones who found them. Eileen’s children were her greatest source of pride. She celebrated each and every one of their accomplishments to the fullest, and it was clear to everyone how much she loved them. Her children and grandchildren were her entire world. She would drop everything she was doing to help them if they needed her. She is predeceased by her grandson, Andrew "Drew" Greeley, III; three sisters, Anne Grover, Barbara Darling, and Roseanne Talbot; and four brothers, Francis, James, Joseph, and Paul Fontaine. She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Greeley of Portland, ME, and Danielle Greeley of Norfolk, VA; her son, Andrew Greeley, Jr. and his wife Chrisanna of South Portland, ME. She was Nana to six grandchildren: Quaneysha, Dalycia, Keegan, Jaida, Finn, and Nora; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Mary Jeanne Sacco of Portland, ME, and Bernadette Gorman and her husband John of Portland, ME; three brothers, Robert Fontaine and his wife Judy of AZ, Henry Fontaine of Portland, ME, and Thomas Fontaine and his wife Dorothy of Portland, ME; and her brother-in-law, Timothy Talbot of Portland, ME. She will be greatly missed by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
