Edward Patrick Ranaghan, christened Patrick Edward Ranaghan, passed away peacefully May 5that the age of 90, after a brief illness. He was born in Portland, Maine, to Charles H. and Margaret (Costello) Ranaghan on February 20, 1925.He attended local schools and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1943. He entered the Navyimmediately following high school and served as a Signal Man on the USS Bogue. He loved his time inthe Navy and was very proud of his service. After the Navy, Edward attended the University of Maine in Orono and graduated in 1951. He was the firstin his family to graduate from college. He began his teaching career in Madawaska, Maine (after having tolook at a map to find out where it was!) After one year, he took a job in Auburn, Maine, and taught atWalton School for three years. In 1956, he began his teaching career at King Junior High School andretired as a guidance counselor in 1983. While at King, he implemented several very successful studentprograms, including the Neighborhood Youth Corps. Eddie enjoyed retirement to the fullest and spent his time attending book fairs, volunteering at a localsoup kitchen and spending time at his camp on Highland Lake. Another favorite activity was hostinghis bi-weekly poker games with Louie, Daniel, Sid, and Lou. Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Griffin Ranaghan, in 2008. He is survived byhis sister, Catherine Monn of Portland, and his three children, Stephanie Smith, Patrick Ranaghan, andMary Latini. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rachel, Patrick, Zachary, and Mackenzie Smithand Meghan and Amie Ranaghan as well as three great grandchildren. Edward enjoyed a very close relationship with his son-in-law, Philip Latini, and his nephew,Thomas Ranaghan, Jr. Both Phil and Tom spent a great deal of time with Edward and were alwaysthere to help. The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Hospital Critical Care Unit who were verycompassionate and helpful to him and the family. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Conroy-Tully CrawfordFuneral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 on Friday, May 8, 2015 atthe funeral home followed by a 10:00am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Josephs Church, 673 Stevens Ave.Portland, ME. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
