Edith (Betty) Kennedy Obituary (1919 - 2013)

SOUTH PORTLAND - Edith (Betty) Kennedy, 94, of South Portland, died Sunday March 10, 2013 at Mercy Hospital. Betty was born in South Portland on January 12, 1919 a daughter of Patrick L. Halloran and Alice E. (Hayes) Halloran. She grew up in Portland and graduated from Deering High School in 1936. She also graduated from Northeastern Business College. Before her marriage to Richard V. Kennedy on September 6, 1941 Betty worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad in the General Offices. After her children were grown, she worked in the real estate business and retired as the Executive Officer of the Portland Board of Realtors. She was an active volunteer with over 1,000 hours of service to Mercy Hospital knitting caps for new born children. She served the VNA working at flu clinics up to the age of 92. Betty was a communicant and a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Cross Church. In addition, she was a member of the Women of Rotary and the Holy Cross Visitation Sodality. Betty was predeceased by her husband Richard V. Kennedy in 2001. She is survived by her children Richard V. and Karen Kennedy of Falmouth, Susan and Michael Walsh of Monmouth Beach, New Jersey and Charlie and Joyce Kennedy of Cape Elizabeth. She also leaves eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
