South Portland - Douglas Leonard Wolfe, 57, passed away at his home on Thursday, October 26, 2023.
Doug was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on March 22, 1966. For his first 11 years he was part of a small community referred to as the Osborne Kids. He moved to Maine with his family in 1978, living first in Buckfield and then in Lewiston. He graduated high school and began a course of machine and tool study at CMVTI (now CMCC) in Lewiston. He sustained a traumatic brain injury in the spring of 1989 which altered his life’s journey. Following a year of intense rehabilitation, he moved to Portland. He was a client of Bayside Neurorehabilitation Services beginning in 1990. He lived several years at their Georgia Street residence. For the past 20 years he was a resident of Pride House in South Portland.
Doug worked at Shaws NorthGate and at Abbot Laboratories for many years. He was proud of working and contributing to his community, as well as helping to pay his living expenses. He enjoyed the opportunities he had to be an advocate for persons with mental illness and/or traumatic brain injury.
Though he lived with some significant physical and mental limitations, Doug matured into a kind, thoughtful, sometimes witty man. He loved his family, work, Yahtzee, occasional games of rummy, classic rock, the Jersey shore, travel with his mom, and playing the drum.
Doug is survived by his mother, Peggy Wolfe Davis and stepfather, Ronald Davis of Waldoboro, Maine; brothers, Britton Wolfe and his wife Cynde of Hiram Maine, Thomas Wolfe and his wife Jennifer of Raeford, North Carolina, Waylon Wolfe and his wife Tristy of Carrabassett Valley, Maine; nieces Katrin Wolfe, Heather Sirois Bright, Christa Sirois, Nya Wolfe, Briggs Bolduc and Lainey Leband; nephews Jacob Wolfe, Derek Mollica, and Walker Wolfe; and his housemates at Pride House. He was pre-deceased by his father, Robert Wolfe; and sister, Tracy Wolfe.
The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Pride House and to Beacon Hospice for their care of Doug when he returned home from Maine Medical Center.
A service of Thanksgiving and Celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Friday November 3 at 1:00 pm at the State Street United Church of Christ, 159 State St. in Portland. Burial will take place at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy Tully Walker Funeral Home in Portland.
