Anthony J. Doria

anthony doria
LYMAN - Anthony J. Doria, formerly of South Portland, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 28, 2017. Born in Portland on July 7, 1958, he was the son of Philip and Anna (Coyne) Doria. A 1977 graduate of South Portland High School, Anthony was a gifted three-sport athlete who attained "State Top 10 Status" in both swimming and football. He graduated NMVTI with a degree in masonry. He wanted to follow in his father's footsteps with a career in bricklaying. He worked for A.L. Doria Construction and then went on to form Anthony Doria Masonry Service. He worked on numerous masonry projects over the years. He was featured in the Portland Press Herald working on the granite steps of the Victoria Mansion. He was very proud to have worked on the repair of the old State House wall in Augusta, the marble altar at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Portland, and more recently, his work to preserve historic masonry on Beacon Hill in Boston. Anthony's talent and passion for masonry arts will live on in the beautiful work he created. Anthony was very involved in his community and whenever someone needed help, he was always there to lend a hand. He went above and beyond for others and had a very special gift for making those around him laugh. Over the years, he traveled several times to the Dominican Republic with Seeds of Independence on a humanitarian and construction mission to help rebuild schools, hospitals, and roads. Anthony was there to help and do whatever was needed to help the less fortunate of the country. He was a member of the Construction League Golf Club, the Lyman Lions Club, as well as a member of the Freemasons. Anthony was also the event director for the Lyman Snowmobile Club and a former member of the Italian Heritage Center. Being a Boy Scout in his youth came full circle when he became a Boy Scout Leader for his son; an experience that he greatly cherished. Anthony is predeceased by his parents and his "grand-dog" Loco. He is survived by the love of his life, Deborah Dryden of Lyman; daughters, Mallory Doria of Lyman and Nina Karpowitz and husband Alan of Minot; sons, Rick Dryden and wife JoJo of Lyman and Joseph Dryden and wife Taryn of New Orleans, LA; brothers, Philip and wife Andrea of South Portland, Peter and wife Donna of Portland, and Carlo and wife Cheryl of Cape Elizabeth; sister, Ann Marie Rousselle and fiance Kris Hall of Scarborough; his beloved grandchildren, Delaney and Daelyn Dryden, Savannah and Logan Karpowitz, and Rhett Dryden, who will deeply miss their "Nonno"; nephews, Philip, Jimmy, and Nicholas Doria, Jack Rousselle, and Jon Benner; nieces, Justine Benner and Christine Rousselle; grandnephew, Ezra Benner; aunt, Dorothy Schidzig of Gray; and several cousins and friends. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 10AM at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.

  8. Anthony always lit up a room with his smile and his friendly nature. Our family was fortunate through my cousin Debbie, to spend many years during our annual travel to Maine with Anthony. My parents were close with him and genuinely liked him; he was like a bonus extra nephew to them. My father would look forward to spending time playing golf when in Maine. Always an adventure for those two. As my cousin was a bridesmaid when I was married in DC. Anthony was there for the fun. Even after the wedding the next day for brunch he made a coffee cake. My other side of the family from CA was becoming fast friends with Anthony. Sadly, about this time 4 year’s ago Anthony traveled to DC with Deb and attended my father’s burial at Arlington National Cemetery for his 21 gun salute. My mother and I were very thankful he made the drive to be there for us. He was again, of great help making homemade spaghetti sauce for all of the houseguests….You will be missed; thank you for leaving your imprint on my family.. Love, Aunt Pat, Suzanne, James, Matt and Scott…my boys will always have good memories as I will remember many good times.. always with a smile….With love and blessings from our family. Gone too soon my friend… Suzanne D. Wheeler and Mary Patricia Twomey Wheeler.

  12. Anthony…
I don’t even know where to start…my first day..my first job…my shyness..my disbelief and unconfident feeling I had…you were there the first customer.. my first friend.

First you were in my book as “mai tai guy” then I got closer and saw you on a side of work basis. You were always my shoulder to cry in…my I guess you could say ‘counselor’ . If I felt I couldn’t tell someone id tell you.

You never rushed me to talk. Never were rude or pushy at my job where I saw you (give or take a few days) everyday I worked for the past ten years.

You helped me with rides… Confidence…advice…support..laughter when I was sad… And being apart of my life as an influence and a adopted family member. ..
Nothing will ever be the same without you.

You have and helped EVERYONE no joke..and expected nothing back.

So devistated I’ll never see your truck again…never stop to day hello….never tell me again that asian taste needs a reality show..or it’s haunted because the I’ve maker always breaks or the cooler…

How you said that I should be on the old MTV shows because sometimes I made decisions where I knew I was repeating a bad mistake …and I should be smarter than that…
All the times you helped me as well when I was in need…

I will miss you more than anything..

I don’t even know how I can stay working happily at my job of ten years knowing you won’t be there anymore…

I’m sorry for not hugging you that last time that I saw you because I was busy on sunday…of all times right?!

    I love you.

    My friend …

    My family…

You were truely one of a kind.

Rest in paradise … You’ve touched so many…

There’s no way you will be forgotten.

    Beautiful souls float on forever…

    And the good die young.
