Yvon "Yvie" Bourque, 83, of Sanford, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 26, after a brief illness.He was born in Sanford on February 9, 1924, the son of William and Alice (Legere) Bourque. He attended Sanford schools and was a 1942 graduate of Sanford High School where he played football and basketball.Yvie was a US Navy veteran of World War II. His service included duty aboard the destroyer USS Hambleton which fought in the D-Day Normandy invasion.After the war, Yvie came back to town and worked for a while at the Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills. He was employed for most of his working life with General Electric in Somersworth, NH with shorter stints at Western Electric and Sprague Electric. He retired in 1986.On September 3, 1949, he married Edith R. Savage with whom he shared 51 years of marriage until her death in 2001. He was also predeceased by his grandson Billy Bourque who died in 2001, by 2 brothers, Walter Bourque and Paul Bourque and by a sister Exilda Bourque.He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.Yvie was a member and Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Sanford Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club.Yvie loved high school sports. He was an assistant football coach at St. Ignatius High School and president of the boosters. A football referee, he was a former member of the Maine Association of Football Officials. He particularly enjoyed following the athletic pursuits of his children and grandchildren. He attended their games from the youth leagues, through high school and right on through college. He was a frequent fan at Cobb Stadium and Goodall Park for football and baseball games, and was always at the Sanford High School girls basketball games where his granddaughter is the varsity coach.Survivors include his son, William G. Bourque and his wife Jeanette, his 2 daughters, Carol Ann Fenn and her husband Stephen, Suzanne Payeur and her husband Marcel, all of Sanford, 2 sisters, Pauline Grondin and Anita Ryder both of Sanford, his grandchildren Michael Parent, Kristy Parent, Seth Fenn, Bradley Bourque, Brian Bourque, Alison Bourque, Ryan Payeur, Corinna Tremblay, Valerie Gendron, Robbie Payeur, Randy Payeur, Craig Payeur, Kevin Payeur, and 10 great grandchildren.Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 5-8 PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, St. Ignatius Church.
