Cape Elizabeth – Winthrop Sylvester MacLaughlin Jr., M.D., 82, passed away peacefully at home on September 17, 2025, with his loving wife of 55 years right by his side.
Born on June 22, 1943, in Stamford, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Winthrop Sylvester MacLaughlin Sr. and Jane Argenio.
During his senior year at Fairfield Prep, his team won the school’s first ever Connecticut State championship in football. Fairfield Prep honored the team with induction into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2010.
He attended Fordham University School of Pharmacy and then earned his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society on graduation.
In June of 1970, he married his best friend and lifelong partner Maria Ines Brennan MacLaughlin.
During his general surgery training at Hartford Hospital, he answered the call to serve in the United States Air Force. He was stationed for two years as a general medical officer at Kincheloe Air Force Base in Kinross, Michigan.
After his honorable discharge as a Major, the two moved to Portland, Maine to complete his general surgery training at Maine Medical Center. He went on to pursue post graduate Fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Carle Clinic in Champaign, Illinois. They returned to Maine where he opened his practice as the first Board Certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon in Portland.
He practiced medicine for over 29 years, where he cared for countless patients with compassion and skill. Throughout those years, his devoted wife was right by his side, managing the office for his solo practice.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed jogging with his Irish Setters, woodworking, boating and fishing with his family, and attending all of his kid’s sporting events and activities. He had a great sense of humor, broad smile and an infectious laugh. He was also an animal lover, tending to all creatures great and small around the home he built.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ines; daughter, Bridget Warnat; son, Dr. Brian MacLaughlin; and is father-in law to Mark (Bridget) and Whitney (Brian). He was blessed as well with eight grandchildren, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Jacob, and Brooke (Bridget and Mark) and Nathaniel, Samantha, Marcella and Lillian (Brian and Whitney) who knew him as ‘Ace’ or ‘Papa,’ whom he adored. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard A MacLaughlin of Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at St. Bartholomew Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland.
