William Pitt Soule
April 1, 1928 ~ April 19, 2018
South Portland - William (Bill) P. Soule passed on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, Maine, after a long illness, surrounded by his family and loyal dedicated caregivers. Bill celebrated his 90th birthday on Easter, April 1, 2018.
Born in Girard, Ohio, to Edna Libby and William Mogan, he was a lifelong resident of the city and state that he loved, South Portland, Maine.
Bill loved Maine. He was very self-motivated and achieved his long successes through sheer grit and many hardships. His primary education was in Massachusetts and Maine.
He was driven to have a very successful professional career in the insurance industry which started with Prudential Life Insurance. This success motivated him to start his own independent life insurance agency, The William P. Associates in the late 1960's, with his first wife, Lillian, as his secretary. His business later evolved into a partnership with Leone Allen, a former Maine state commissioner of insurance. The agency was known as the Soule Allen Agency which became a highly successful independent insurance agency in South Portland and known throughout southern Maine. This was sold, and the agency is now known as Noyes, Hall and Allen.
Bill was very involved in the community he so loved, South Portland. He was chairman of the Planning and Zoning Appeals Board. In that capacity, one of his great achievements was to get approval and establishment of local school tennis courts and of the South Portland Recreational Center and Pool. He was president of the South Portland Chamber of Commerce, president of Mogan Properties, a member and then president of South Portland Kiwanis, mentoring students of South Portland High School and offering internships at Soule Allen Insurance. He also chaperoned trips to Florida for spring break for key club memberships. He started as a member and then became president of the Holy Cross Church Parish Council and School Board. His proudest accomplishments was keeping Holy Cross Church School tuition free for its parish members and expanded the fundraising through the church with the annual Holy Cross Christmas Fair.
Because of his love of travel and cruising, he opened up three travel agencies, Travel Planners, Village Travel and Soule Travel.
He was fond of his sporting and fishing camp, the Norway Pines, located in lower Sysladobsis Lake, Maine, of which he completely renovated and it then became one of the more successful camps in northern Maine.
He retired to his condo at T-Ledge and became president of the association for ten years, making changes to by-laws, property management and spending. He loved sitting on one of his patios with his three cats, Mogan, Mikka and Moira.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lillian Whittemore Soule; his son, David J.; and his infant daughter, Mary J . He is survived by his wife, Gloria; and his children, William G. (Jenny), Nancy S. Druce (J.Dix), Christopher F. (Erin K); his step children, Joseph DiMauro (Ursula), Janice DiMauro, Joanne DiMauro-Iannone (Bruno), and Jon F. DiMauro (Lisa); his grandchildren, William P. II, Katie, Michael and Ian Soule, Elizabeth Kirby, Reid Smith, Ryan Farr, Gregory and Nicole Woods; and many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 72 Federal St., Portland, at 10:00AM on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
Because of his love of animals, memorial contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the Animal Refuge League, PO Box 336, Westbrook, ME 04098
