William Ward Hoag

William Ward Hoag, 75, of Springvale, Maine, passed away on March 27, 2009 at H.D. Goodall Hospital surrounded by his family. Born March 4, 1934 in Burlington, Vermont, he was the son of James H. and Helen (Ballard) Hoag.Bill was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Nasson College in Springvale, Maine and later received a Master of Education degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of New Hampshire. Bill served in the U.S. Army and was trained as a Medical Aidman. During his two years in the army he was stationed in Verdun, France.He worked briefly for the Merrill Trust Company in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. On December 29, 1956 Bill married Natalie Marriner (also a Nasson graduate) and in 1959 they returned to Springvale when Bill became Nasson College's first Alumni Secretary. During his 24 years of employment with Nasson College, he served as the Director of Admissions and as Registrar. He was honored with a life membership to the Nasson Alumni Board of Directors. After Nasson closed in 1983, Bill worked for the State of Maine, Department of Employment Security as a tax auditor until his retirement in 1996. He also worked part-time for 26 years as a counselor/caregiver at Community Partners, Inc., a group home for developmentally disabled adults.Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church in Springvale and served on the Board of Property and Finance.Bill's family and home were very important to him. He enjoyed traveling with Natalie to visit his grandchildren and supported them in their many activities. He loved to do projects in and around the farmhouse (circa 1864) where he and Natalie lived together for 50 years. His other interests included following the Patriots, the Red Sox and reading.Bill was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, James H. Hoag, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Natalie, of 52 years; a son, Michael B. Hoag, and his wife, Tina, of Alfred, Maine; two daughters, Cathryn H. Wagner, and her husband, Brent, of Valparaiso, Indiana; and Laurie H. Normand, and her husband, Philip, of Orono, Maine. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Sarah and Joseph Hoag; Gretchen, Ingrid and Ella Wagner; and Jeffrey, Julie and James Normand. Also surviving him are his aunt Frances H. Baker of Colchester, Vermont and several nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, March 31st from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11am at the Springvale First Baptist Church.
