Scarborough - William "Bill" Campbell, passed away on September 29, 2023, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loved ones at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Bill's journey through life was as unique and varied as the stories he shared with friends and family.
Born in Portland on March 22, 1942, Bill was the son of the late Lawrence and Mary (Glynn) Campbell. At the young age of 18, he answered the call to serve his country and joined the military. During his time in the Air Force, Bill embraced his adventurous spirit which he kept throughout his life, and most notably included thrilling Saturday skydiving sessions that often saw him free falling right over his own house.
As children, Bill and his siblings spent idyllic summers on Peaks Island, creating lasting memories of their time by the ocean. Throughout his life, Bill had a passion for motorcycle riding and photography.
Bill's photography skills later led to him becoming the in-house photographer for Ri Ras, where he spent countless evenings documenting the dinners, drinks and social gatherings of his close-knit circle of friends. He was a quiet and reserved individual until a topic piqued his interest, at which point he could engage in animated conversations.
Known for his sense of style, Bill was always impeccably dressed, embodying his image-conscious nature. He had a deep love for travel and cherished his journeys to London and Ireland, especially when they brought him close to the ocean, a place he held dear. Bill was also a devoted pet owner, sharing his home with numerous cats over the years and a small lap dog named Baby, whose passing left him devastated.
One of Bill's most unique relationships was with a pet seagull he affectionately named "Friend." For over 15 years, he would set out food on a table, and the seagull would visit him outside, providing a unique and heartwarming companionship.
Throughout his life, Bill was a passionate CPA and partner in Boucher, Perkins, Campbell and Paradis accounting firm in Brunswick, retiring in the mid 2000's. He was a passionate individual who went through various phases of adventure and hobbies. He enjoyed a cold Miller Lite, loved golf, and took great pride in his long-standing membership at the Spurwink Rod and Gun Club.
Bill's most remarkable achievement was his unwavering commitment to his home, where he resided for over 50 years. His love for Scarborough was evident in every aspect of his life, and he leaves behind a legacy of independence, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around him.
Bill's presence will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his memory will live on in the countless stories and cherished moments he shared with those he loved.
Bill was predeceased by his brothers, Peter and Marc Martin.
He is survived by his siblings, Maureen Pattee of Portland, Michael Martin and wife Pamela of Scarborough, Steven Martin and wife Mary of Standish, Denise Martin of Gray, Patrice Martin and husband John of Cumberland Foreside, Lisa Ciriello and husband Tony of Saco; step-daughter, Stephanie Brawn-Mead (Jeff), of Florida, and their children, Mackenzie, Ben, and Maddie. He was the oldest in the family, always taking on a protective and caring role.
A celebration of Bill's life will take place during a private Scattering at Sea ceremony provided by Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bill's memory to The Warrior Dog Foundation by visiting https://warriordogfoundation.org/donation/
