Waman D. Hotham

Waman D. "Lucky" Hotham Waman Dale Hotham, age 64, died after a long illness and very courageous fight, on Sunday, April 17th at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine. Waman was born on Friday, December 13, 1946, in Rumford, Maine, to the late Helen (Kelley) Hotham and Gilbert Hotham, both of Rumford. Being born on Friday the 13th, his family quickly nicknamed him Lucky.Lucky grew up on Burgess Hill in Rumford with 2 older brothers, Skip & Kent, an older sister, Patricia and a younger brother, Lee. He graduated from Stevens High School in 1965 and began working at Boise Cascade paper mill, where he worked for close to 30 years. He was active in his community as a Boy Scout leader, a coach to community center basketball and also an active member of the local school board. Lucky had a playful, joking nature with an infectious laugh. He had a love of all types of games whether it be cards, board games or sports. His youngest daughter, Kim, remembers a time when he coached her in community center basketball and he made a deal with her: "if you win this game, I promise I will let you get your ears pierced." It was the encouragement she needed.He also enjoyed his "down" time. He was an avid reader, a trait carried on by all of his children (and many of his grandchildren.) He could sit for hours watching TV Land reruns, Westerns, Taxi reruns, and Comedies. His daughter, Kristen, remembers watching "Continental Divide" with him while still at a somewhat young age. And while she didn't understand all of the adult humor, it was her dad's contagious laugh that made her laugh then and makes her smile today. Lucky met his beloved wife, Sharon Sprague, later in life and married her on May 25, 1996. Theirs was a love built on trust, hope and unending kindness toward each other. They spent many happy hours together at home with their animals and visits from their kids and grandkids. His granddaughter Emily remembers the kindness he showed her and the will to fight he emulated in his last days. Her memories are happy knowing Who her Grampy gained when he lost this last battle.Lucky is survived by his wife, Sharon; a son, Jeffery Hotham and his wife, Marie, of South Hampton, MA; daughters, Kelly Ellis and her husband, Todd, of Buxton, ME, Kristen Frost and her husband, Keith, & Kerry Kaplan and her husband, Steve, all of North Monmouth, ME and Kimberly Russell and her husband, Andy, of Rumford, ME; his stepsons, Jason, Nathan & Robert Dow, all of Sanford, ME; his sister, Patty Ingles of Rumford; his brother, Lee Hotham; and 22 beloved grandchildren.The family would like to extend its appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, especially Dr. Tierney, for the wonderful care and compassion in which they took care of Lucky.
