Walter J. Stilphen Sr.

Scarborough- Walter J. Stilphen Sr., 82, of Juneberry Lane, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the Gosnell Hospice House with his loving family by his side. He was born in Portland, Maine on June 27, 1933 the son of the late Arthur N. and Marion (Wadleigh) Stilphen. He attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School. He married Shirley A. Osborne and together they raised their family and made their home in South Portland. Walter worked as an Iron Worker and was a member of International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers, local union #496, a job which he held for thirty five years before retiring on October 31, 1990. In his spare time, Walter enjoyed playing golf, working on the family geneology, and an avid reader of history and politics. His greatest love was the time he spent surrounded by his wife and family, especially his grandchildren. Walter was predeceased by two brothers Arthur and Norman and two sisters Marian and Hazel. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Shirley Stilphen of Scarborough; one daughter Lisa Ellington of South Portland; five sons Walter Jr. and his wife Carolyn Stilphen of CA, Steve and his wife Faith Stilphen of Cape Elizabeth, Dean Stilphen and his companion Jackie McAuliffe of Saco, Greg and his wife Carrie Stilphen of South Portland, Kevin and his wife Beth Stilphen of Cape Elizabeth; eight grandchildren Erin Stilphen, Carly Stilphen, Christy Stilphen, Alexander Stilphen, Lydia Stilphen, Theresa Rock, Nathaniel Ellington, and Maya Ellington; several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 from 3:00 to 4:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. A service will follow at 4:00pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Burial will be private.
