Walter Crockett

March 28, 1933 ~ October 20, 2012
SCARBOROUGH - Walter Crockett, 79, of Scarborough, died on October 20, 2012 at a Portland Hospital. Walter Crockett was born March 28, 1933 in Portland, Maine to Harrison Crockett and Delia Clancy Crockett. He was one of ten Crockett children: Harrison "Lolly", William "Brud", Francis, John "Duddy", Robert, Margaret "Sister", Carroll, Eugene, Walter, and Phillip. He grew up on Munjoy Hill and, along with his uncle Pat Clancy, was one of the "Dump Rangers". Later, he worked variously as a longshoreman, bricklayer, and painter. From 1950-1953, he served in the US Army as a paratrooper; on his return to Portland he married Virginia Mayberry and became stepfather to David, Marie (now Marie Elder), James, Virginia (now Virginia Miccuci), and Daniel Paul. He and Virginia had three children of their own: Walter, Carolyn, and William Edward, known as Eddie. He was blessed with and loved his grandchildren: Timothy Crockett, Keagan, Karinna, and Mikail Russo, and Seth, Mattie, and Ted Crockett, and his great-grandchild Liam Crockett. For seventeen years, Walter lived on the streets; he became sober in 1980 and remained sober for the rest of his life. He was active in alcohol recovery programs, starting one at the Windham jail. In 1981 he re-married, to Ann Bundy, and became stepfather to Christopher, Alison, Lisa, and Nicholas Bundy. He ran his own painting business and then worked as a custodian for Husson College and St. Joseph's School in Portland. Later, he worked in Westbrook as the painter for the school and town. He retired in 2005 and was a resident of Scarborough. Walter was a great story-teller, and an avid boxing and Red Sox fan, who was beloved by everyone who met him. His steadfastness and lively spirit will be greatly missed. I knew Walter for 7years when he was the painter for the Westbrook Schools Department and I served as the Superintendent of Schools.Walter was a good friend and I enjoyed his many visits to my office near the end of the day. We would talk just about everything and those visits were always interesting and time well spent. He indeed was a great story teller and had lived an unusual life but found himself after 17 years of searching. After he retired i missed our visits and I regret that we did not stay in contact. My sincere sympathy to his family.
