South Portland - Viola M. Roberts, 92, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at the South Portland Nursing Home. Born in Exeter, Maine to the late Leon and Ferne Crosby, she spent most of her childhood in Brooks, Maine and graduated from the Brooks High School in 1943. Vi worked at Woolworth's in Belfast for several years after graduating from high school. Vi married Ervin Roberts on August 24, 1948 in Morrill, Maine. Together, they raised 3 children and took care of a young nephew for five years. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and cooking. She was well known for her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Vi was a devoted Campfire Girls leader and caregiver to her family, friends and neighbors. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Ervin; grandson, Kevin Roberts; parents, siblings - 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 2 step-brothers and 2 step-sisters. Surviving are her children, Vicki Roberts of South Portland, Wendi Verrill and husband Cliff of Westbrook, ME, Ernest Roberts and wife Gina of Gorham, ME; granddaughter, Rhiannon Leeman and husband Seth of Hollis, ME; 3 great-grandchildren, Amaya, Connor and Olivia Leeman all of Hollis, ME; 2 brothers - Neal Crosby of Colorado Springs, CO and Gordon Crosby of Greene, ME; 1 sister - Zelma McNamara of Middlefield, CT; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the South Portland Nursing Home for their compassionate loving care and support of Vi over the past year and a half. A graveside service will be held in the summer at Reynolds Cemetery in South Brooks, Maine. A Celebration of Vi's life will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the South Portland Nursing Home's Resident Council.
