Thomas Joseph Driscoll

Portland - Thomas J. Driscoll, 60, passed away unexpectedly on March 7, 2019 at his home. Tom was born in Portland, ME on January 27, 1959, the son of Harold T. and Patricia A. (Maloney) Driscoll. Tom attended Scarborough schools and was a graduate of Scarborough High School, class of 1977. After high school, Tom decided to enlist in the Navy and was very proud of having the chance to serve his country. While he was in the Navy, he was assigned to the USS King DDG 41, which was very important to Tom, as he would always let anyone he told stories to about his time in the Navy the ship he was assigned to. During his time serving his country, he was very proud of his assignments; noting that he had the chance to visit Spain, Turkey and Egypt. After the Navy, Tom found himself back on dry land living in Charlotte, NC. He worked for Dilworth Food Center while he was in Charlotte but one of his favorite stories about living in Charlotte wasn't his job, it was his next door neighbor. Some may know his neighbor as none other than Ric "The Nature Boy" Flair - WOOOO! He acknowledged him as a wrestler, but really treated him like just another person and neighbor, with a casual "hi" when they saw each other. Next came Tom's return to Maine; returning to Portland, Tom found himself working as a Chef at Cap N' Newicks and eventually going to work for MMC until his health prevented him from working any longer. Tom's life passions molded Tom into the man everyone that came in contact with him knew. He started his life as an all-star little leaguer, who transformed into a "troublemaker with nine lives" who loved fast cars, to a serviceman for his country, to an independent, thoughtful, loving father and brother to his family. Just because he was thoughtful, didn't mean he wouldn't prank a family member or friend. One of Tom's famous jokes was when he sent his family Christmas cards with fake scratch tickets. He received several phone calls from his siblings stating their excitement with the ticket(s) he sent them being a $100,000 winners. To their surprise while on the phone with his siblings, Tom's response was uncontrollable laughter and him telling them to turn the ticket over as it read, "Please collect your winnings from Yo Mamma." That was Tom though; you knew you were close to him if you were on the other end of one of his jokes. When he wasn't joking around, Tom enjoyed spoiling his kids with treats, dirt bikes, bowling, owning his fair share of muscle cars (honorable mention: his 1967 GTO), watching The Little League World Series, collecting coins, lighthouses and cats (that's not a typo), the Red Sox and watching NASCAR. Tom is predeceased by his parents, Harold and Patricia; a sister, Theresa Ann Gunther and his brother, Daniel J. Driscoll. Tom is survived by his daughter, Erica Driscoll of Old Orchard Beach; his son, Paulsen Lallo of South Portland; his sister, Donna Stevenson and husband Jeffrey of South Portland; his brothers, Robert J. Driscoll and his wife Terri of Westbrook and Paul H. Driscoll of Fort Pierce, FL and many nieces and nephews. Visiting Hours will be held at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland on Wednesday, March 13 from 4-6PM followed by a Celebration of Tom's life at 6PM. In lieu of Flowers, please consider making donations to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, PO Box 336, Portland, ME 04098 or adopt a cat or maybe even several cats because that's what Tom would do.

  2. I am just now hearing about Tom’s passing. He and I spoke about Nascar every time he came in to MMC. I still have the Christmas gifts and even the gift tag, that hangs on my tree every year. He was a sweet, thoughtful man who brought a smile to my face every time I was lucky enough to run into him. He has made a permanent mark on my heart and he will never be forgotten. I will cheer for #19 Martin Truex Jr in his memory.
