Thomas J. Bickford

thomas bickford
Casco Thomas J. Bickford, 49, of New Road, passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at his home. He was born on June 13, 1966, in Portland, ME, a son of Leonard E. and Dorothy J. (McFarland) Bickford Sr. He grew up in South Portland, Maine and graduated from South Portland High School in 1984. Tommy started working at the age of 14 for Southern Maine Cleaning Company, then went on to work for Smahas Legion Square Market, Hutchins Trucking, and was currently employed for the last 20 years as a city carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He often referred to himself as carrier 690 which was the route he delivered in the Knightville area of South Portland Maine for many years. Although he faced health issues that would keep many a man down he would force himself to get up and go to work to complete his appointed rounds. There were times when he would deliver the route then head straight to the hospital to be hooked up to an antibiotic drip. He was a man of little words but had the biggest heart and was a very spiritual soul. He was there for everyone whenever they needed him. He liked swimming in Sebago Lake, watching the beautiful sunsets while sipping on a twisted tea, golfing and traveling with Dad, having heart to heart talks with Mom, playing polka at all the Bickford get-togethers, playing cribbage, driving around with his music blaring, and spending time with his friends. Tommy had a great sense of humor and you could see the twinkle in his eyes when he was joking around with you. He is survived by his loving parents, Leonard and Dorothy Bickford Sr. of Casco, ME; brother, Leonard Bickford Jr. and Jane of Gorham ME; sisters Diane Payzant of Norridgewock, ME, Lynn Bickford and Dennis Burke Jr. of Casco ME; nephew Tyler Bickford and fiance Christa, nieces Madison Bickford and Isabelle Bickford. He is survived by two young ladies dear to his heart Jaden and Grace with whom he was like a father to. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, friends, and his cat Faith they all meant so much to him. We will miss Tommy so much but he will be forever in our hearts. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 1-5pm at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Monday at 10:15AM followed by a 11AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel. 20. While delivering mail at night in a blizzard in 2014, I first came across Tom. He had broken a boot lace but continued to move forward through the storm to complete his route. Although I was able to assist Tom that night, it was his determination and dedication to the businesses and homeowners’ of South Portland to complete his route, 690.Letter carriers work through all kinds of weather and temperatures, are determined, hardened, proud, friendly, and steadfast. Tom was a true letter carrier for South Portland and will be missed by his fellow brothers and sisters of NALC Branch 92.Fair Winds and Following Seas!

  21. To my dear friend, Tommy Bickford; If you miss le pass, the past will mess you…You are one of heavens newest angels. I will never forget you, you’ll be in my heart n soul till the day I die. You were a friend I could call anytime, anywhere. You even visited me in Florida, an we toasted milk, and twisted some teas, and the gulf of Mexico shined a little more because of you and me. You’d laugh rite now, if you knew where I was, being unvoluntarily held in a government bubble, dealing with my health! I love you now and I loved you then. You’ll always bee in my prayers with all my Amens! Love and Peace, till we meet again! Sincerely, Carol Flaherty….I still have your Ozzy n Sir Elton John Tees, its between you n me…. hope my table is with yr family,,,,!!!! for you I adore…I say no more….!

Going to miss running into him on his rounds in the Knightville area of South Portland. I always called Tom “Bick”. Tom was a special person and will be missed by those of us who knew him.
