the v.f.
PORTLAND - The Very Reverend Lawrence Joseph Conley, V.F., 72, a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland for 45 years, died peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Friday afternoon, November 30, from complications of a recent illness, with his brother priests at his side. He was born on August 14, 1940, the son and only child of Lawrence Conley of Galway, Ireland and Delia Cunningham of County Mayo, Ireland. He grew up in Portland and attended St. Dominic's Grammar School and Cheverus High School. He graduated from St. Francis College (now University of New England) in 1962, and then entered St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts to prepare for the priesthood. Fr. Conley was ordained a priest on May 20, 1967 by Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, and was appointed associate pastor of St. Mary's Church in Westbrook. Subsequently, Father also served as associate pastor at St. Patrick's Parish in Portland, St. Joseph's Parish in Lewiston, and Sacred Heart Parish in Portland. In 1980, Father Conley was named pastor of St. Christopher's Parish on Peaks Island. Two years later, Father was appointed the Diocesan Director of Campus Ministry for the Diocese of Portland as well as pastor of Our Lady of Wisdom Parish in Orono, and served in this capacity until 1987 when he was named pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Biddeford. Father Conley then served as pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Norway from 1996 until 2000, and pastor of St. Anne Parish in Gorham for the next ten years until his "retirement" in 2010. Father Conley has served the Diocese of Portland in many posts throughout his years as a priest. These included membership on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission where he served as its Chairperson for three terms. He was a member of the Diocesan Music Commission and also served as its Chairperson. He was also a member of the Diocesan Personnel Board. Fr. Conley served two terms as a Dean for the Diocese of Portland. In 1980, Father Conley was named Diocesan Moderator of the Maine Council of Catholic Women and also served a term as the Province Moderator for the Boston Province of the Council of Catholic Women, and most notably, served two terms as the National Chairman of the Diocesan Moderators of the Council of Catholic Women in the United States and was a four-year member of the Executive Board of the National Council of Catholic Women in the United States. Upon retirement in August, 2010, Father Larry took up residence in Cathedral Rectory and joined the pastoral team of priests serving the Portland area parishes of Cathedral, St. Peter, St. Louis, Sacred Heart/St. Dominic, and St. Christopher (Peaks Island). Father Larry enjoyed a very active "retirement," and continued to preside at multiple Sunday and weekday Masses at the five parishes, hear confessions every Saturday, and offer pastoral care to parishioners. Having spent so much of his life and ministry in the Portland area, many parishioners knew him well, and so Father Larry was frequently requested to preside at a number of funeral Masses during these past two years of his retirement. He also took a great interest in helping to mentor seminarians. Last year, upon the recommendation of his fellow priests, Bishop Richard Malone appointed Father Conley as the Vicar Forane for Vicariate IV. This was a role that Father assumed with great dedication and vigor. Father was recently invested in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Father Larry will be fondly remembered in the hearts of his former parishioners, friends, and fellow priests for his kindness, generosity, compassion and his deep passion for exercising his priestly ministry. He loved everything about Christmasa"no one celebrated the birth of the Lord more fervently than Father Larry. Father's "Christmas Village" is legendary. And being so proud of his rich Irish heritage, Father Larry also celebrated St. Patrick's Day with zeal and great joy. He looked forward to getting together with his old childhood friends at Dimillo's Restaurant every Sunday evening, and was instrumental in planning regular gatherings of the clergy because he so enjoyed and appreciated opportunities for fellowship with his brother priests. Father prepared a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner at Cathedral rectory for his priest friends last week just as he has been doing for a number of years past. Fr. Conley faced these last days and made some personal, end-of-life decisions with great clarity of mind, as well as with admirable courage, profound faith, and genuine hope in the Lord. Visitation will be held Sunday, 4-6 p.m., at Sacred Heart/St. Dominic's Church, corner of Mellen and Sherman Streets, Portland. A reception of the body and Liturgy of the Hours will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Very Rev. Louis Phillips, Rector of the Cathedral will preside. Fr. Conley will lie in state at the Cathedral from 4:30 - 8 p.m. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral, with the Most Rev. Joseph Gerry, O.S.B. as principal celebrant. Very Rev. John Skehan will be the homilist. Arrangements are under the care of the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. Conley's memory are suggested to: Diocesan and Priest Benefit Plan, 510 Ocean Avenue, Portland, Portland, ME 04103 or the Sisters of Mercy, 966 Riverside Street, Portland, ME 04103.Online condolences may be expressed below.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. It is very difficult to put into words how much Fr. Conley touched our lives. Kevin’s CYO days were filled with encouragement and memories. Then he worked for Fr. Conley at the Newman Center in Orono. A few years later, we were married and the rest is history. The celebrations in life, the occasions of death, the birth of our two children and many, many, memories will live on in our hearts forever! As we begin to celebrate Advent and look forward to the birth of our Lord, let it be in the spirit of Christmas, your favorite holiday, that we say, Rest in peace we love you!

  3. My wife and I wish to express our deepest condolences to Bishop Malone, the priests, and family of Father Larry who was our pastor in Saint Mary’s Church in Biddeford. We will always be grateful for the faith and trust Father Larry had in us to help him in carrying out these two ministries. We will surely miss him. and that annual Christmas card greeting.

  4. I served as Lector for some of his celebrations of Mass at Our Lady of Sebago and had occasion to chat with him. I attended his Masses at St. Anne whenever I was in Gorham. I had always hoped to catch one of his Masses at the Cathedral, as I wanted to say Hi to someone I considered a friend. I miss him.

  6. Rest in peace Fr.Conley. He was a great leader at St.Anne’s parish where we were parisheners for 28 yrs. He was so helpful when my Father in Law passed in November 2008. He went out of his way to help us plan the funeral and get in touch with Fr. Ron who was returning from a trip. God blessed us with you in our lives.

  7. Larry’s death is very difficult for me. I have lived so many memories over the past week of our younger years and how close our families were. As I reflect on the last week, I see how full circle it was. His last weeky Mass was said for Fred and his last weekend Mass said at SH/S.D. His room at Mercy faced Winter St. Always in my heart and prayers! Love, Mary

  9. Rest in peace, Father Conley. Thank you for your service…you were a man of conviction, and also compassion. I was honored to have served along side you on so many Sundays…as vessels for the Word of God. You made a big impact on my life and, I’m sure, so many others.

  10. Fr. Larry will be missed by many in the State of Maine. He had touched so many lives over his years of service to the Catholic community. I remember his 1st mass at his home parish of St. Dominic’s after his ordination, serving as an alter boy. I worked closely with him in CYO in the 70’s and recall his eagerness to push the youth to make decisions and not dictating his agenda. I later had the pleasure of having him as a pastor at St. Mary’s in Biddeford and enjoyed visiting the rectory at Christmas; he truely loved this time of year. Rest in Peace on the Irish side of heaven.

  11. Fr Larry came to Sacred Heart in the late 70’s and formed a CYO group. We all became a family under his leadership. We couldn’t ask for better spiritual guidance. Fr Larry had a great sense of humor..yet was so loving and caring for his flock. God brought Fr Larry home to be with his parents again! We that are left behind have only fond memories. Rest in Peace Father Larry. Mary and the Forestell Family.

  12. Fr. Larry was a wonderful priest, and an inspiration to many young people through his work with CYO, supporting various retreat programs, and at the Newman Center. But he also reached the much broader Catholic community in a way which set an example for many of us. Although it has been a long time since I saw him, I have very fond memories of his work, and I stand in awe when reading the long list of ways he affected the church in Maine. Rest in peace Larry, and welcome home good and faithful servant.

  13. The Maine Council Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and the National Council of Catholic Women have lost one of it’s greatest advocates! Thank you Father for your support over the years. We will miss you!

I WILL KEEP YOU ALWAYS IN MY HEART.
