Sylvia M. McCray, 73, of Sanford, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 10, 2025, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born on February 26, 1951, in Massachusetts to the late Pasquale and Lillian (Burbank) Powlesland. At a young age Sylvia came to live with her family in Maine and grew up and attended local schools.

Sylvia found great purpose and joy in her work as a caregiver with Anytime Services for Seniors, where she devoted her time to helping seniors. Whether accompanying them on outings or providing companionship, she cherished the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.

Children and dogs alike were naturally drawn to Sylvia’s warm and gentle spirit. She enjoyed life and spending time with family. She also enjoyed doing word puzzles and searches, cribbage going to fairs and driving her new car around. These simple joys brought her comfort and enjoyment.

A woman of faith, Sylvia was an active member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale. Her faithfullness guided her actions and brought comfort to those around her.

She is predeceased by two siblings Roberta Milliken and Richard “Dickie” Ham.

Survivors include her loving husband Micheal McCray of Alfred, a son Jason Cilley of Acton, her brother Robin Ham of Acton, step daughters Linda McCray and Melody (McCray) Blakely of Ill, her grandchildren Robert Gould of Lisbon and Brieanna, Casey and Margaret all of Indiana, close cousin Colleen Bruce and her husband Michael Hickey of Sanbornville, NH, several family members, friends and her beloved chihuaua Chico.

Sylvia’s legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and love. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 25, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale Maine, 10 Pleasant St., Springvale.

Graveside service to be held in the spring.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to the family to help with cremation costs.

  1. I’m in shock at the loss of my cousin Sylvia. I’ve seen her every Friday for the last 12 years. She was always kind and loved socializing in the hair salon with all the ladies. And boy, did she love her black coffee. My condolences to Mike McCray,her husband, Jason, her son and Robin Ham her brother.
